Marvel’s Daredevil had a strong fan following during its time on Netflix. Unfortunately, the series was canceled after Season 3, leaving many storylines unfinished. Years later, Marvel Studios brought back the character with Daredevil: Born Again, but this version isn’t exactly the same as what the original creators had planned for Season 4.
Let’s take a look at what Daredevil Season 4 could have been before the show was canceled.
What would have happened in Daredevil Season 4?
Although the original Daredevil team never got to make Season 4, the showrunners had some exciting plans. In 2020, former showrunners Steven DeKnight and Erik Oleson shared details about what they had in mind.
One of the main villains planned for Season 4 was The Owl, a lesser-known gangster from Marvel Comics. In the Netflix series, Leland Owlsley (played by Bob Gunton) was introduced as a corrupt businessman working for Wilson Fisk (Kingpin). However, he was killed off in Season 1.
For Season 4, the creators planned to introduce his son, who would take on the title of The Owl and seek revenge for his father’s death. This would have created an interesting new antagonist for Daredevil to face.
Another key storyline in Season 4 would have involved Mary Walker (played by Alice Eve), who first appeared in Iron Fist Season 2. In the comics, Mary Walker is known as Typhoid Mary, a villain with multiple personalities and dangerous abilities.
The showrunners wanted to bring her back for Daredevil, where she would play a major role in a dark and twisted love story mixed with a murder mystery. This would have been a modern take on the classic "femme fatale" character, with a fresh perspective that avoided outdated, sexist storytelling.
Melvin Potter (played by Matt Gerald) was introduced in earlier seasons as the skilled craftsman who created Daredevil’s suits and gear. In the comics, he eventually becomes the supervillain Gladiator.
Season 4 would have explored his journey toward becoming Gladiator, possibly turning him into another major threat to Daredevil. However, one of the challenges the production team faced was scheduling conflicts with Matt Gerald, who was also working on James Cameron’s Avatar sequels.
Despite having these exciting ideas, Daredevil was canceled due to business decisions rather than low ratings or lack of fan interest. At the time, Netflix was moving away from Marvel content, and Disney was preparing to launch its own streaming service, Disney+.
Because of this shift, Netflix chose to cancel Daredevil and other Marvel shows like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punisher. This left fans disappointed, as many of these stories felt incomplete.
It’s always disappointing when a beloved show gets canceled, especially when there were big plans for the next season. Daredevil Season 4 could have explored exciting new villains, complex character arcs, and intense action.
While Daredevil: Born Again is bringing the character back, it remains to be seen whether it will capture the same magic as the original series.
For now, fans can only wait and see if Born Again delivers the thrilling Daredevil story they’ve been hoping for.
