In the latest episode of Chicago P.D. Season 12 Episode 15 'Greater Good,' viewers witnessed the multilayered and morally confusing character of Deputy Chief Reid played by Shawn Hatosy. As tensions within the Intelligence Unit are increasing, viewers can expect a face-off between Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) and Deputy Chief Reid in the upcoming episodes.
During an interview with ScreenRant, Shawn Hatosy shared insights about the slow burn development of Reid and the difficulties in plotting his character. He stated,
"It has been a slow reveal with Reid. They bought him very slowly"
Hatosy continued, The slow development enabled his character Reid to transition from a reliable chief to one who works with dubious ethics and manipulates people for his ends.
The turning point for Reid comes in Chicago P.D. Season 12 Episode 15, Greater Good, when his connection related to the Violence Reduction Initiative is revealed. Deputy Reid controlled a ring of criminals, officials, and even lawyers whom he used to manipulate arrests. This comes as a shock for many viewers who thought Reid was an honest officer of the law enforcement fraternity.
In the interview with ScreenRant, Shawn Hatosy added that it is important to know about Deputy Reid's history. The traumatic experience of losing his mother in a bank robbery is instrumental in determining who he turned out to be. Hatosy revealed,
"I think his origin story is true. I believe he experienced loss, and it's so hard and complicated to understand what that loss would feel like."
For Reid, his mother's death was the ulterior motivation that compelled him to law enforcement, but it also set him on a dangerous path of moral compromise.
What happened in Chicago P.D. Season 12 Episode 15?
NBC's police procedural series Chicago P.D. Season 12 Episode 15 'Greater Good' was released on March 5, 2025. The episode mainly deals with Sergeant Voight's confrontation with Deputy Chief Reid for enacting a Violence Reduction Initiative in a disturbed neighborhood.
The episode begins with the Chicago P.D. dealing with an increase in homicide cases throughout the neighborhood. Sergeant Hank Voight and his team track down a dangerous gang leader, Hamani, who ran the Macklin Hustlers. However, when the team reaches Hamani's location, Chief Reid pulls the trigger and kills Hamani. As ASA Chapman revealed previously to Voight about Reid's habit of uncovering secrets about people and using them as scapegoats, Voight understands the true colors of Deputy Reid.
Voight realizes Deputy Reid has the habit of 'collecting and counting the criminals' he kills. However, his annoying habit makes him misuse his powers. By the end of the episode, Voight realizes that Reid was the mastermind behind the entire plot of killing Hamani and shutting down Mackelin Hustlers, mapping a plan with the rival gangs.
The episode's significant moment is thus when Voight, who has always operated in morally gray areas, finds himself facing off against Reid. In the interview with ScreenRant, Shawn Hatosy reflects on the dynamics between Voight and Reid, noting it as a cat-and-mouse game. He mentioned,
"I just really loved the dynamic of the two"
Hatosy also shares that in many instances Reid and Voight come face-to-face with the realization that despite their differences they share many similarities in their approach to justice. At the end of the episode, Voight and Reid are seated in a car when Deputy Reid threatens Voight as he says,
"I know exactly who you are. Whatever guilt you are feeling right now. You and me we're are exactly the same. I'll see you on the streets."
Voight seems worried as Deputy Reid knows that Dante Torres slept with Gloria Perez, wife of a drug lord, and Voight covered it up. Voight shares with ASA Chapman that he has to take action against Reid's wrongdoings. He tells Chapman,
"To take his (Reid) a** down"
The power dynamic between them continues to evolve, and Reid's action will have lasting consequences for Voight and the team.
