Taboo is a gritty historical drama created by actor Tom Hardy along with Steven Knight and Hardy’s father. It takes viewers back to the dark and dangerous streets of London in 1814 and follows James Keziah Delaney, a mysterious and brooding man.
Played by Hardy himself, James was presumed dead as he was away from his place for a long time. However, when his father dies, the man returns to claim what’s left of his late father’s shipping business.
It's been almost eight years since fans watched Taboo Season 1, and now Tom Hardy finally has something to share about Season 2. The Mobland star revealed that the delay wasn’t due to the show being canceled or forgotten but rather because of his own busy schedule.
In an interview with MovieWeb, the actor shared:
"I've been busy... So, Taboo is something that's for me and my family and Steven. It's something we wanted to take time to do properly."
Hardy said that Taboo is a very personal project for him. It’s something he developed along with Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight and his father, Edward “Chips” Hardy. Because of how close it is to him and his family, he didn’t want to rush through making another season

Tom Hardy opened up about Taboo Season 2 delay

As mentioned above, Taboo is a TV series that centers around James returning to work. Taking over a company sounds simple, but not for James. When he steps into a new role, he doesn’t just get a business.
He walks straight into a mess. The company is surrounded by lies, corruption, and people he thought he could trust but can’t. On top of that, his own family is hiding some dark secrets.
What was supposed to be a valuable inheritance starts to feel more like a dangerous burden. James had to survive in a brutal part of London, where people play dirty and power comes at a cost.
Many viewers found the story quite interesting and have been eager to dive back into James's journey in Taboo Season 2. While addressing the gap, Tom Hardy also mentioned:
"When I have the space properly to commit, I'd revisit it properly. So it's never been something that we didn't want to do. It's a question of when, and doing it properly."
He said the delay wasn’t because they gave up on the show, but simply a matter of timing and doing it right. Now that he finally has space in his schedule, Hardy confirmed that development for Taboo Season 2 is underway.

What will be the story in Taboo Season 2?
Tom Hardy has confirmed that he and Knight are working on the second chapter's story, which will continue after James Delaney and his crew sail off to America. The season is also expected to take a darker and more surreal turn, with Delaney exploring strange realities possibly influenced by drugs and opium.
There's also talk of involving the US spy network called 'Colonnade' and Tom Hardy has teased a possible time jump to 1968, which could take the story into the Vietnam War era. While Hardy is the only confirmed returning cast member so far, familiar faces like Jessie Buckley, Stephen Graham, and Mark Gatiss may reprise their roles as well.
