The miniseries features a tense historical moment in Spain when a group of robbers broke into the central bank in the morning and held around 200 hostages. This heist took place exactly three months after the coup d’état, also known as 23F (short for February 23rd), a real-life event in 1981.

The synopsis of Bank Under Siege reads:

“Barcelona, May 23rd 1981. Exactly three months have passed since the attempted coup d’état at the Congress of Deputies when eleven hooded men entered the headquarters of the Central Bank in Barcelona."

It continues:

"What starts as a spectacular robbery soon becomes a real challenge to Spain’s recent democracy. The robbers hold more than 200 hostages in the bank and threaten to kill them if the government does not agree to free Colonel Tejero and three others in charge of the 23F.”

However, the makers took some creative liberty—some parts have been fictionalized to depict the drama in the country.
