Bosch has been one of the biggest franchises that well defines the police procedural genre, and much to the surprise (and excitement) of the fans, another spin-off show named Ballard (based on Michael Connelly's The Late Show) is gearing up for its release. The series will follow the story of one of the OG characters named Renée Ballard (Maggie Q), and the filming reportedly wrapped back in November 2024.
Now the latest updates have emerged from a Prime Video teaser where viewers got to witness the titular character in some quite intense action and drama. The 40-second-long clip has already garnered quite some social media attention and continues to do the same. Harry Bosch's universe still has a lot to offer, and this time Renée Ballard will take the lead!
What will the Bosch spin-off Ballard be about?
The official synopsis of Ballard, per IMDb, reads:
"LAPD Detective Renee Ballard oversees a new cold case division in the department."
Ballard will feature Detective Renee Ballard from the LAPD, and this time, a cold case division is what she has been assigned to. With the caseload being extremely high and resources limited, Renee Ballard faces a lot of challenges during her investigation.
However, as she starts to work on the long-gone-cold mysteries, Renee eventually realizes that she has landed herself in the middle of a huge and horrifying conspiracy. Will she seek the help and guidance of an old friend and colleague (the retired officer Harry Bosch, aka Titus Welliver)?
This will probably be the connecting point of the spin-off show and the main franchise. Michael Connelly, the brainchild of Bosch and author of OG novels (from which the shows have taken inspiration), reportedly spoke highly of Maggie Q, saying:
"She is Ballard. Like in the book, she has confrontations with superiors, mostly male, and she gets it and makes it work. There's a physicality to her that works. We got a winner."
What do we know about Ballard's release window and cast?
Ballard, per reports, went into production last year in July, and cameras stopped rolling by November. Given the fact that Bosch: Legacy (another franchise spin-off) aired its final two episodes of Season 3 on April 17, 2025, a mid-2025 release window seems most logical.
However, no dates have been revealed yet, and fans are now eagerly awaiting an official trailer of the Renee Ballard spin-off. Here's a look at the cast of Ballard:
- Maggie Q in the role of Detective Renée Ballard
- Courtney Taylor playing the part of Samira Parker
- John Carroll Lynch in the part of Thomas Laffont
- Victoria Moroles
- Michael Mosley
- Hector Hugo
- Noah Bean
- Rebecca Field
- Amy Hill
More about the Bosch franchise
The first Bosch episode aired back on February 6, 2014, and went on till 2021. Following the massive success of the show in terms of viewership chart numbers and reviews, the franchise was revived with a spin-off show, Bosch: Legacy, in 2022.
The OG show has seven seasons, and when Bosch: Legacy aired, it was quite well-received by the viewers—not to mention the series went by the unofficial tag of Bosch Season 8. Now that the 2022 spin-off has concluded its third season, it leaves bandwidth for Ballard to premiere. For now, fans are keeping a keen eye on the release dates, which can be made official anytime.
