Following the Netflix release of BET+ original dark comedy show Average Joe, the first season has incredibly intrigued the viewers. The loosely adapted series from the creator's life generated positive responses from fans and viewers as they enjoyed the new take on the genre.
Average Joe Season 1 tells the story of Joe Washington and his close friends and family being trapped in unexpected and deadly circumstances after Teddy Washington (Joe's father) passes away.
Joe didn't have a smooth relationship with his father, as he often left him alone in his childhood. Teddy was an average worker in front of the world, but soon after his death, it was revealed that he was involved in dr*g dealing and had conflicts with a Russian mob who's now looking for Teddy to settle some scores.
Following Teddy's death in Average Joe, the gangster and his henchmen are now behind Joe and his friends as they all indulge in serious fights and manslaughters.
Ranking Average Joe season 1 episodes from best to worst
The first chapter of Average Joe concluded with ten episodes, each exploring new hurdles and the violent theme of the BET+ series.
1) Episode 10: You Must Be Joe
The first and best episode in Average Joe Season 1 is You Must Be Joe, in which we watch emotional imbalance, the biggest and most awaited face-off between the Russian mob Nicolai and Joe, and almost two major cliffhangers that have injected curiosity among viewers.
The last episode of Average Joe begins with Joe and his family, along with Cathy and Leon, celebrating Jennifer's birthday. We suddenly witness Joe held captive by Nicolai, who is thrust into revenge for losing his only son.
Nicolai tells Joe that he will kill Jennifer in front of his eyes and ruin his life. Meanwhile, Jenn convinces Arina (a skilled assassin hired by Nicolai) to join forces with her and save Joe. Arina lost her child due to the mob, and considering that, she agrees to help Jennifer.
Joe succeeds in killing Nicolai after an intense fight and goes back to his family. Meanwhile, Cathy and Leon visit a dr*g dealer to make a deal, unaware that the event will culminate in Cathy being shot and sustaining an injury.
The last episode of Average Joe does not show Cathy's fate. The plumber finds himself alone as Angela (his wife) leaves home with their daughter.
2) Episode 1: Pilot
The pilot episode features Joe Washington discovering what his father has done and being in great shock when he faces the outcome of it. After Teddy's funeral, Joe finds himself tied to a chair, and his daughter's boyfriend, Dimitri, turns out to be the gangster's son.
Dimitri tortures Joe and tells him to return the $10 million cash and Lamborghini stolen from his father or else they will kill everyone. However, Joe ends up killing Dimitri, and his close friends Leon and Benjamin arrive on time.
3) Episode 5: A Cautionary Tale of Frontier Justice
The fifth episode features stress and anxiety among the characters as Joe brings them all to a place, and Jennifer and Angela are still unaware of the intensity of the danger they're in.
Arina succeeds in finding Joe's address, followed by Pam suggesting that they should use Jennifer to attract Nicolai's attention. However, the whole gang is under great stress, and Joe has to figure out ways to protect his family.
4) Episode 6: Green and Blue
Now that Joe and his team know that Teddy stole the car and money, Joe has to find it before the Russian mob can make things worse. To help Joe escape the cops and go in search of the cash, Cathy and Touc decide to distract the police.
This allowed Joe to continue his plans with the help of his friends. The episodes highlight constant threats posed by Nicolai, who has become even more evil after losing Dimitri.
5) Episode 4: The Above Average School Teacher
The fourth episode of Average Joe Season 1 begins with Joe explaining to Cathy and Leon that since they've killed Dimitri, things have gotten back to normal. Cathy urges everyone to continue searching for money as she's the most desperate to become rich, but no one listens to her even when she warns about the police investigating Dimitri's murder.
Later in the episode, Joe, Leon, and Benjamin discover that they have been captured in a camera and the clip shouldn't reach the cops. Additionally, Jennifer expressed disappointment in her father after discovering that her father is behind his murder.
As a dark comedy, the episode highlighted the series' comical moments while also portraying the threats around them.
6) Episode 3: Donuts & Whiskey?
In episode three, Joe Washington, Leon, Cathy, and Benjamin find themselves in hot waters after the discovery of Dimitri's head. This happened because Leon did not bury the chopped head properly, and as a result, it remained on top of the ground.
Following the discovery of the head in Average Joe, the police begin an investigation with Sgt. Pam leading the case. One of the cops who had past issues with the Russian mob identifies Dimitri Dzhugashvili.
Donuts & Whiskeys begins with Joe and his family celebrating Christmas, but their celebration is ruined after Teddy's gift to them. The episode reflected on family dynamics and how Joe and his team have entered into a dark world.
7) Episode 7: Prisoners
Prisoners begins with Cathy unhappy that Joe can only find some of the cash and asking Joe where the rest is. Jenn and an injured Leon walk in on Cathy and Joe arguing about the money. They inform Joe that Nicolai's henchmen took away Angela, leaving Joe Washington desperate to save his family.
Even though episode seven did not feature any intense battle, it showed bombshell confessions and desperation in Average Joe.
8) Episode 2: Bachelor in Paradise
The second episode of Average Joe Season 1 showed the aftermath of killing Dimitri. Joe and his team are confused about where to dispose of the dead body, and they finally decide to dismember it and bury the parts in a far place.
Following Dimitri's death, Nicolai sends more henchmen to confront Joe and his friends. However, no one reveals that truth, and later, they dismember Dimitri's body.
The episode featured how some average workers were left with no choice but to commit haunting murders and find ways to hide them.
9) Episode 9: Sounds Like Mail Man
The penultimate episode of Average Joe was filled with suspense and drama. Joe tries to locate where Jennifer had been taken by the mob. The whole team is in danger as Nicolai succeeds in kidnapping Jennifer and blackmails them.
Angela is hospitalized, and Joe and Leon are exploring Nicolai's cabin. Meanwhile, Cathy has found another money-making job: selling dr*gs.
10) Episode 8: Ride Or Die
The eighth episode of Average Joe majorly focuses on emotional stress and drama. It features Angela being taken to a hospital after she collapses. Following her hospitalization, Leon is seen comforting his friend.
The episode covers Benjamin's dealing with his problems, Cathy's quest to become rich, and Pam's search for Nicolai Dzhugashvili.
