It: Welcome to Derry is a prequel series that is based on author Stephen King's world. It Welcome to Derry will be set in the 1960s and present the events that eventually have terrible consequences on the film adaptations of the same source. In a recent turn of events, It: Welcome to Derry creator revealed that he has well-laid plans for a three-season arc of the show.

The interesting thing to note in this regard is that the three seasons of the show will trace back in time, with the first season being set in 1962, the second season taking place in 1935 and the third season occurring throughout 1908. All of these three instances will mark the one time in twenty-seven years that the dreadful Pennywise arrives to scare the living hell out of everyone.

As per the official description of the show, It: Welcome to Derry will chronicle the rise of Pennywise in the otherwise non-descript town of Derry, Maine. Bill Skarsgard will be reprising his role of Pennywise, along with Taylour Paige, James Remar, Kimberly Guerrero, and Jovan Adepo. Here's everything we know about the upcoming HBO show.

What did Andrew Muschietti say about It: Welcome to Derry?

It: Welcome to Derry creator Andrew Muschietti recently spoke at length about the upcoming HBO show in an interview with Radio TU. He revealed that the structure of the show will follow the interludes in the novels by Stephen King. He further stated:

"It’s a story that’s based on the interludes of the book. The interludes are basically chapters that reflect Mike Hanlon’s research. They’re fragments of his research. For 27 years, it’s the guy trying to figure out what it is, what did it, who did it, who saw it, and all that stuff. So they talk about catastrophic events from the past, like the fire in the Black Spot…. the massacre of the Bradley Gang, a gang of bank robbers in the ’30s… and the explosion of the Kitchener Ironworks. Every time (Pennywise) comes out of hibernation, there is a catastrophic event that happens at the beginning of that cycle. There’s a reason why the story is told backwards. So the first season is 1962, the second season is 1935, and the third season is 1908."

Muschietti also added that much of the show will be centered around the research conducted by the character of Mike Hanlon. As of now, HBO is yet to officially announce a release date for It: Welcome to Derry. However, it is being speculated that the upcoming show will drop sometime this year.

Andrew Muschietti on Stephen King's role in shaping It: Welcome to Derry

In the aforementioned interview, Andrew Muschietti further emphasized the integral part played by Stephen King in the development of the upcoming HBO show. Speaking about his relationship with the celebrated author, Muschietti remarked:

"Stephen King has to approve everything. But it was really informal this time. I’ve had a close relationship with Stephen King since I made the movies. He writes to me, and I write him back. It’s an honor for me, and I consider him a friend."

He then added:

"Obviously, as we progressed, we kept showing him the work, and he approved the first draft of the script. Then we showed him where we would take the future seasons of the show. He trusts us because of what we did with the movies, which he loved as much as audiences did.”

It, the movie, is available for streaming on Max.
