With the eagerly awaited Andor season 2 set to land on Disney+, showrunner Tony Gilroy has revealed important details about the next installment of the Star Wars series. Andor, set around the adventures of Cassian Andor, has attracted considerable interest for its realistic take on the initial rebellion against the Empire.
Gilroy, who had worked on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, was instrumental in building the Andor narrative. Andor season 2 is expected to explore deeper into events like the Ghorman Massacre and the development of Cassian's character. According to Gilroy, the storytelling will be organic in nature and prioritize narrative context over outright fan service.
Storyline and narrative structure
Andor season 2 will have an unusual narrative form, with each three-episode arc taking place in a separate year, making it possible to cover several years in the life of Cassian. This format was made possible by the shorter timeline, given that the series was originally envisioned for five seasons but will end with the second.
Gilroy explains to Entertainment Weekly on March 10, 2025:
"If time was unlimited and money was unlimited, and we could have done the 5 seasons that we planned on in the beginning, I don't think it would be better at all...I can't think of a better way to lay it out than what we lucked into. Because the idea that it takes a year and 12 episodes for him to evolve into a revolutionary, it really needed all of that room for that."
The year-long breaks between episodes will heighten the story, making every moment that more powerful.
The Ghorman Massacre, a pivotal moment within the Star Wars universe, will receive extensive coverage. Gilroy has referred to it as "a total blank slate," providing a new take on an otherwise unexplored event.
The season will also see the first encounter between Cassian and K-2SO, something for which fans have been eagerly waiting. Gilroy has admitted the pressure placed on their performance for this "meet-cute," "the bar is high."
Release schedule and production issues
The release schedule of Andor Season 2 has been changed with Disney deciding to release three episodes every time, with a finale on May 13. Gilroy has attributed this move to Disney, stating to Collider recently:
"We heard about that as we finished. We finished the show in November. We finaled the show in November, so we really had to wait for Skeleton Crew. It's a Disney decision. There's an internal logic behind it. They have their reasons."
This timing will certainly affect fan interaction, as Gilroy jokingly states:
"What are they going to do? It's a movie a week, you know?"
In spite of these adjustments, Gilroy is intent on bringing a good story. The show struggled, with budget issues and having to raise money in a fast-evolving streaming environment. But the first season's critical acclaim was enough to convince Disney to fund the second.
Character development in Andor season 2 and plans for the future
The character of Cassian Andor is going to experience tremendous development during Andor season 2 as he becomes one of the prominent characters in the rebellion. Gilroy has referred to Cassian as the "Star Wars Jesus" due to his central position in the plot.
Season two will also touch on emotional investment in the characters, and Gilroy warned that viewers can expect emotional moments like those from Rogue One. Regarding his future in the Star Wars universe, Gilroy has ensured that he would be moving away after Andor.
He comments on his ten-year involvement in the same Collider interview, saying:
"I've been peripherally involved for 10 years and intensely involved for six years, so that's a pretty big chunk of my life."
In spite of this, he is committed to making the story of Andor real and without additions and is keen on the fact that everything has to be for the sake of the story.
With the release set for April 22, fans can anticipate a thrilling conclusion to Cassian Andor's journey in Andor season 2.
