Andor season 2 is right around the corner, to be released on April 22, 2025, and is going to serve as a prequel to Rogue One, which ended on a devastating note. We already know what happens to the characters of Andor at the end. However, the show still has room to add more layers to the story.

Alan Tudyk and Diego Luna spoke about the upcoming season with ScreenRant at the Star Wars Celebration. They expressed that Andor season 2 is going to be tonally different from the film.

Why will Andor season 2 have a different tone than Rogue One?

Andor season one, set five years before the events of Rogue One, gave us a much-needed backstory on Cassian Andor, whom we know from the movie. It showed the gradual formation of the Rebel Alliance that would go up against the Galactic Empire.

While Rogue One had humorous parts despite being a heartbreaking story, season 2 of Andor will not. The upcoming season is going to be heavy as the Rebel Alliance grows stronger, Cassian Andor plays a key role in the resistance against the Empire, and the rebels move towards the events of Rogue One.

In conversation with ScreenRant, Alan Tudyk, who stars as K-2SO, and Diego Luna, who stars as Cassian Andor, spoke about the tonal differences between Andor season 2 and Rogue One. They also spoke about how the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes affected filming and the set.

Tudyk said,

When I shot in Andor, it was a tense time actually in the business. Tony had to leave because the strike happened, and so we were nearing a strike, and so we had a timer going and it was trying to get everything done before the strike happened. So it was fun and it was beautiful to be back and especially back on a Star Wars set where everything that is done is art. I feel like all the walls, the panels, everything, but we were in a crunch on the story as far as what was happening in the story was very serious.

Diego Luna expressed,

I think the tone in Andor is different than Rogue One. I think in Rogue One, we had moments where we were allowed to be light and fun, and then there was, I mean, there's a lot of darkness in Rogue One too, but there was moments that were meant to be funny and loose and Andor doesn't have many of those. And you'll see a different tone in K2's performance in Alan's performance because everything is weighted, emotionally weighted in this second season. And it's true that, I mean, these two seasons, the first one we shot while Covid,

The show's tone was affected both by the story and the filming environments. Rogue One had to include some light moments to familiarize viewers with the characters. However, Andor season one has already done that, and hence, season two can focus on telling the story as it is meant to be told without having to be light and fun. Besides, the 2023 strikes had added a sense of urgency to the filming process, which definitely changed the tone.

Diego continues,

It was one of the first shows that went back to the studio. So the rules to execute were rough. There was no interaction, it was difficult. And we were all far away from home in difficult moments. And then for this second season, we went through the strikes. So it was quite a complicated shoot. But I think that kind of energy behind that, we are really making sure we get it and we get it right because there might not be another chance to actually do it. There's that sense of, of something being in risk constantly.

It will be interesting to see how Andor season 2 fills the gap between its first season and Rogue One. Besides, the tonal differences might just make the season more exciting; we never know. While the fates of most characters are already decided, this season will hopefully help us understand the story better.

Andor season 2 arrives on Disney+ on 22nd April 2025.
