Netflix recently released a true crime docuseries, 900 Days Without Anabel, that explores the longest-running and the most disturbing missing person case in Spain's history. The series, directed by Mónica Palomero, will dive into the abduction of 22-year-old Anabel Segura in Madrid in 1993.

Anabel's kidnapping timeline provides harrowing details from what eventually turned out to be a prolonged case of abduction. As per reports, in 1993, Emilio Muñoz Guadix and Candido Ortiz Añón kidnapped Anabel Segura.

The investigation went on for three years, keeping law enforcement officers continuously engaged with the task of uncovering what exactly happened to Anabel and her kidnappers. Palomero's latest Netflix docuseries also provides unprecedented access to police recordings made during the negotiation process. The official synopsis of 900 Days Without Anabel reads as follows:

"Anabel Segura vanished while jogging on April 12, 1993, kidnapped. For nearly 3 years, her country awaited her rescue. '900 Days Without Anabel' recounts that period and police negotiations with kidnappers through original tapes."

Anabel Segura kidnapping timeline

April 12, 1993

Forty-eight hours after Anabel's abduction, her family was contacted by the kidnappers for the first time, demanding 50 million pesetas (approximately $945,000) as a ransom for her release. They reportedly tried to convince Anabel's parents that she was alive, though the 22-year-old had already been murdered.

April – September 1993

From April to September 1993, the kidnappers maintained contact with Anabel's parents, trying to exploit their desperation to get money out of them. As per reports, they made 14 calls over the five months, trying to convince the family that Anabel was fine.

Anabel’s father, José Segura, soon became desperate and announced a massive reward for anyone who would provide information on his daughter's whereabouts. He even kept their family home mortgage to gather funds for the ransom. The kidnappers did not arrive at the designated location for the transaction on separate instances.

July 1993

The kidnappers tried to orchestrate Anabel's safety by sending a tape to her family containing a woman's recorded voice, claiming that she was okay and wanted to get home. It was later uncovered that the voice belonged to a woman named Felisa Garcia, one of the kidnappers' wives.

1994 – 1995

With leads on the case getting cold, the police released the audio tapes sent by the kidnappers and asked the public to help them identify the recorded voices. The case garnered much media attention and soon became a national obsession.

September 1995

In September 1995, investigators had the first breakthrough in Anabel's case after Candido Ortiz Añón's voice was identified with a Toledo resident's help. Eventually, the police arrested Emilio Muñoz Guadix, Candido Ortiz Añón, and Felisa Garcia on September 28, 1995.

Two days later, on September 30, authorities found Anabel's remains near the abandoned factory in Numancia de la Sagra, where she was murdered. As per the case timeline, this harrowing discovery came precisely 900 days after Anabel Segura's disappearance.

1996

In 1996, Muñoz Guadix and Ortiz Añón were convicted of abduction, murder with treachery, illegal detention, and attempted fraud by The Provincial Court of Toledo. Both of them got 39 years of imprisonment, and Felisa Garcia, Emilio's wife, got 6 months in prison because of her involvement in Anabel's murder. However, a year later, Emilio and Candido's sentences were increased to 43 years owing to the heinous nature of the abduction and the murder.

As seen on 900 Days Without Anabel, Ortiz Añón had a heart attack in 2003 and died in prison while serving his sentence at Ocaña prison. He was 48 years old at that time. Muñoz Guadix was released from Herrera de La Mancha prison after serving 18 years on account of good behavior.

In subsequent interviews, he expressed remorse for Anabel's parents' loss and even publicly apologized to them. According to his statements, the crime was purely driven by financial desperation.
