An Update On Our Family, HBO's latest three-part docuseries, investigates the adoption dissolution scandal of the Stauffers family in 2020.

James and Myka Stauffer are an American couple who owned a family vlogging YouTube channel, where they would post videos about their family life with their four children.

In 2017, they announced that they had adopted a 2½-year-old Chinese boy, Huxley, which led to one million subscribers on their channel. The boy was diagnosed with autism some years later, which led to the couple talking about their journey of raising a child with special needs.

The boy stopped appearing in their videos around 2020, which led to an adoption dissolution scandal, where the family faced major backlash online, and their channel was taken down.

An Update On Our Family explores this scandal through the deleted videos of the Strauffers and Huxley, and it premiered its Part 1 on January 15, 2025. The series is available to stream on Max.

Why did Myka and James Stauffer rehome their adopted child? Exploring the controversy behind An Update On Our Family

Myka and James have enjoyed a steady viewership on their YouTube channel, where they posted about their American family and lifestyle with four children. Like many American family vloggers, the Stauffers also gained viewers by showcasing their personal lives on the Internet.

After they adopted Huxley, their fanbase increased tenfold, with them getting many sponsors, which the couple featured on their vlogs. While their channel has now been taken down from Youtube, in an earlier vlog, Myka can be seen bonding with Huxley over 'Dreft baby detergent,' which was clearly a sponsorship video, which led to many people accusing the couple of using Huxley for views on the Internet.

While Huxley was mostly the subject of their vlogs, their audience noticed his absence in their videos and social media. Upon questioning and backlash, Myka and James revealed that after Huxley was diagnosed with autism, they felt inept in taking care of him, and they decided to rehome him.

When the backlash on their social media went out of hand, James posted a final video on their channel in 2020 stating:

"For us, it's been really hard hearing from the medical professionals, a lot of their feedback, and things that have been upsetting. We've never wanted to be in this position. And we've been trying to get his needs met and help him out as much as possible... We truly love him."

While Huxley appears in the docuseries, from the old videos that Strauffers shot for their YouTube channel, his face has been blurred to conceal his identity. Since he has been in the public eye for so long, the makers felt that it was just to finally give the child the privacy he deserves after he has been rehomed.

In a final social media post by Myka, she revealed that Huxley has been rehomed with another family, and he will now have a 'new mommy' who is medically trained and will understand his professional needs better.

Details about Huxley's new home have not been released, and he has been renamed by his new family, who wants to keep him away from the media and public eye. Myka described that he is 'thriving' and 'happy' with his new family.
