American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez: Recap of Episode 9

In Episode 9, American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez took us right to the edge of Hernandez's downfall. The episode opens with him being taken out of his home in handcuffs.

The focus also shifts to Gillette Stadium, where Patriots owner Robert Kraft and coach Bill Belichick deal with the fallout of his arrest. They seem more caught up in the PR disaster of Hernandez’s arrest than in the fact that one of their star players faces a murder charge.

Kraft said:

“I feel duped, absolutely duped… Do you know how this looks for us? I knew it was a mistake to draft him. He fell to us for a reason.”

This captures the complex emotions and reputational damage the Patriots face. In real life, as on the show, the team begins to erase Hernandez’s presence.

The courtroom drama heats up in this episode. Hernandez’s fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins, is pressured to testify about Hernandez’s actions and her own suspicions. Yet, when asked about the box Hernandez had her throw away, Jenkins replies it contained marijuana instead of a gun. This moment highlights the bind she’s in.

Her words to her mother in the courthouse bathroom add another layer of emotion. It is heart-wrenching, to say the least.
