American Idol season 23 will be released on ABC on March 9, 2025. However, the network has decided to air a special episode right after the March 2, 2025 Oscars.
Other huge changes in the series will be seen with this new installment. First, Katy Perry is leaving the judging panel and second, Carrie Underwood will replace her.
We saw Carrie all those years ago in America Idol season 4 when she was a contestant herself. She could be an apt judge for the show because of how she has been through it all herself.

American Idol season 23 will air on ABC at 8 PM Eastern Time. Fans can later stream the episodes online from Hulu. Here is a chart for various regions to check their release time.
As for fans who would want to stream the episodes later through Hulu, you can check the platform for new American Idol episodes on the next day at 3 am Easter Time. It can be accessed with a subscription.
American Idol will also air a special episode after the March 2, 2025 Oscars. The Osars will start at 7 PM Eastern Time and have a schedule for three and a half hours.
However, viewers know that it is rarely the case and the program goes on for longer than that. Thus, we can expect the American Idol special episode to air somewhere around 10:30 PM to 11:30 PM Eastern Time.

ABC has released a teaser introducing Carrie Underwood on the judging panel. Along with her, we see Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. Host Ryan Seacrest is also returning as a host.
While talking about Carrie on the show, Craig Erwich, the President of Disney Television Group said,
“This upcoming season marks 20 years since Carrie won America’s hearts on Idol and launched her successful multi-Grammy Award-winning career. As a former Idol and dynamic musical force, she brings a remarkably unique perspective to one of the most popular shows on television.”

Carrie Underwood as a Judge on American Idol
Carrie has been super excited to be a judge and this is imminent from her social media. While talking to Buzz Brainard in Las Vegas, she expressed,
"I like to think that I am versatile. Hopefully, when I listen to people come and audition, I can have any lens I need to put on in terms of what music I’m thinking."
Fans understand that her time on the show will be different from what they experienced with Katy. As Carrie talked about her style of judging, she said,
"I think I can be honest and constructive but still kind. And I think that’s the whole point, ’cause people are coming in and, you know, it’s dreams. You’re a part of somebody’s story from that moment on. I think it’s important to be honest, but it’s also very important to be kind, so hopefully I can marry all of those together and be a good judge.”
In the trailer, we can see a flashback of Carrie's journey on the American Idol. She is a young kid, contestant number 14887, who ultimately established her name in the music industry with he talent and voice. As she talked about her career and life, Carrie said,
"I went from nobody knowng my name to tens of millions people watching the show. I'm proud of everything that I was able to accomplish on the show, and I'm so proud of everything that I've accomplished since."
