ABC has confirmed the American Idol Season 23 release date. The new season premiers on March 9, 2025. This time, Carrie Underwood is replacing Katy Perry as a judge. Along with her, we will see returning judges, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan who have been on the show for seven seasons now.

American Idol will also release a special episode of 30 minutes right after the March 2, 2025 Oscars. It will be released on ABC at 10:30 PM Eastern Time. Although, there is an air of doubt regarding the same.

The Oscars are scheduled to begin at 7 PM Eastern Time and run for three and a half hours. But we know that is rarely the case and the show goes on for longer than that. This leaves us with the special episode being potentially late for its release. The rest of the season will begin on March 9, 2025.

American Idol Season 23 Preview Breakdown

American Idol Season 23 preview sets our expectations for the new season with Carrie Underwoods as a Judge replacing Katy Perry. The video begins with Carrie when she was a contestant herself in season 4 in 2004.

The preview has her song, "So Small" playing in the background. This feels so nostalgic for the fans who have watched her journey when she started out on American Idol as she is right back at her roots.

Then we see the trio of Carrie, Luke, and Lionel at the auditions. Carrie is interacting with the contestants and having an emotional moment. The most heartfelt of them all was when Carrie asks a contestant about who her inspiration is, and she answers,

"I'm looking at her right here".

Carrie Underwood as American Idol Season 23 Judge

Carrie Underwood has gone through the whole process of the show and won. This makes her perfect because she is qualified to be a judge. Although, we can tell from the preview that her time on the series will be different from what we were used to seeing with Katy.

In a video shared by American Idol, we see Carrie going through her journey as an idol herself 20 years ago. It was when her mom asked her if she wanted to go to the auditions, she would drive her there. The auditions were held in St. Louis. Carrie says,

"I went from nobody knowng my name to tens of millions people watching the show. I'm proud of everything that I was able to accomplish on the show, and I'm so proud of everything that I've accomplished since."

Carrie Underwood has truly made her name in the music industry since winning Season 4. She is kind and poised and the audience respects her for rising from nothing and becoming everything. She has sold 85 million records worldwide, has 8 Grammys to her name, 10 People's Choice Awards, and 7 CMA Awards.

Last month in November, ABC announced more details about the show where we saw the judges express their excitement about the brand new season. Carrie talked about how they are "finding some incredible talent" to which Lionel replied, "The talent is out of this world!"

American Idol Season 23 Release Date

American Idol Season 23 release date is on March 9, 2025, on ABC at 8 PM Eastern Time. Episodes can later be streamed via Hulu.

This time, the show is going to be released much later than what fans have been accustomed to since 2019. We have seen a new season in February at the latest. Although, no reason was given by the network for a late release this year. But as Ryan said, and we agree, "It is going to be a great season."
