The latest American Idol Season 23 episode started with Carrie Underwood's performance. She performed as a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Heart's Alone.
Filo, 23, performed The Beatles' song With a Little Help from My Friends. Lionel said that it was a "smackdown," while Carrie stated:
"Every week you are giving more entertainment value. It was a wonderful way to start the show."
Mattie Pruitt's rendition of Piece of My Heart by Janis Joplin. Carrie told her to find her "sass." Luke advised her not to get "scared" of herself and that it was one of his favorite performances from Mattie.
John Foster, 18, performed Elvis Presley's Jailhouse Rock, which Carrie appreciated. She noted that John's song choice was "great" and that he made it his "own."
"I knew you were in the zone. That boy knows what he's doin'!" said Lionel.
Desmond Roberts performed the Commodores' Jesus is Love. Listening to his song, Lionel said that Desmond found some "octaves" which he didn't sing, and that Desmond tried to take his song.
Next was Jamal Roberts, 27. He performed The Isley Brothers' Shout, Parts 1 & 2. Lionel Richie said that it was so "professional" and that he was "so good." For Amanda Barise's performance, she sang Michael Jackson's I Can't Help It. American Idol judge Carrie Underwood said that it was "incredible."
Canaan James Hill performed Aretha Franklin's Mary, Don't You Weep, to which Carrie reacted:
"Vocals were spot-on, but I think you cheated the system. I wanted to see you rock out! At some point, do the unexpected."
Lionel Richie said that it was "unbelievable."
