Cillian Murphy's Thomas Shelby is a man of business in Peaky Blinders, the critically acclaimed BBC crime drama series.
As the ruthless head of a Birmingham gang, Thomas was a strong man who rarely showed emotions, except for the love of his life, Grace. Their tragic relationship on the show remains iconic and a constant source of grief in Thomas' life because he eventually lost his wife forever.
Grace entered Shelby's life as a spy and started working at the Garrison pub to stay close to the men and their business dealings.
Thomas is instantly attracted to Grace when he spots her at the Garrison and asks her if she is a wh*re. His physical attraction is palpable, but there is another side to this attraction - he warns her about working at the pub.
More on Tommy-Grace's relationship in Peaky Blinders in our story.
'Already Broken': What did the iconic scene mean for Tommy- Grace in Peaky Blinders?
The 'Already Broken' scene in Peaky Blinders Season 1 Episode 2 is not only one of the most devastating scenes on the show but also sparked chemistry between Thomas and Grace.
Grace asked Thomas for permission to sing at the pub as the show progressed. Thomas asks her to sing for him first, and when he asks her to sing a sad song, she says:
''But I warn you, I'll break your heart''
To which Thomas replies:
''Already broken''
While Grace was alluding to the sad song, the scene clearly foreshadowed the couple's doom and how Thomas would be left heartbroken after Grace's eventual death.
Another key scene for the couple is Peaky Blinders Season 1 Episode 5, where Tommy asks Grace to point a gun at the IRA men at the pub. Thomas brutally kills one of them, and realizing that he just showed his most vulnerable part to the woman he loves, he says, 'You've seen me."
Grace also shoots one of the IRA men, establishing that she also harbors the darkness inside her, like Thomas. This is the moment the couple first realizes their similarities and openly shows each other vulnerabilities.
The emotionally charged scenes between them and Grace's dangerous position in Thomas' life prove that the couple was headed for doom but still pursued their relationship.
Aunt Polly also realizes that Thomas has called hard for Grace when the Peaky Blinders are outed, and says:
''There’s only one thing that can blind a man as smart as you Tommy…love. It’s that barmaid.”
Grace's death changed Tommy in Peaky Blinders
While Thomas engaged in casual s*xual relationships with a lot of women, including Mary and Lizzie, Grace was the only woman he loved.
In Season 1, Harry also hints that Thomas has wanted nobody since he returned from the war, which makes his falling for Grace even more significant. Even after realizing her true identity, the gangster cannot help but fall for her, and the two eventually marry and have a son in Season 3.
Thomas was even ready to become a changed man for her because Shelby Company's illegal business was too much for him. But their marital bliss is short-lived as Grace is fatally shot in Peaky Blinders Season 3, and Thomas changes forever.
He eventually marries Lizzie when she gets pregnant with his baby, but it is more of a marriage of convenience. He keeps hallucinating about Grace and gets consumed by her grief long after he is married to Lizzie, which hints that he never stopped loving her.
