Black Mirror, the anthology TV series on Netflix, doesn't usually continue one episode's story into another. At least it didn't for the first six seasons. But in the seventh season of the show, released on 10th April 2025, Black Mirror has an episode that serves as a direct sequel to the 2018 interactive film Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.

Plaything, the fourth episode of the seventh season, follows a game journalist turned developer struggling with differentiating fiction from reality. The episode also has two actors, Will Poulter and Asim Chaudhry, reprising their roles from Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.

Plaything, an episode in season 7 of Black Mirror, tells the story of a gaming journalist, Cameron Walker, and his obsession with a game that hampers his perception of reality. The logline for Plaything on Netflix says,

"In a near-future London, an eccentric murder suspect is linked to an unusual video game from the '90s - which hosts a society of digital forms."

Will Poulter returns as Colin Ritman in Plaything, a genius game developer. In Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Colin Ritman is a game developer in 1984, working in the company Tuckersoft, who wants to help Stefan Butler develop his adventure game. Ritman plays a crucial role in the story as the developer who presents Stefan with multiple choices throughout the story, confusing him and also the viewers. The film has multiple alternate endings depending on what choices the viewers make.

In Plaything, we see Ritman after the events of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. All we can say without giving away any spoilers is that he alters Cameron Walker's life significantly. Will Poulter's return is being greatly received by fans. Poulter has played characters across various genres. His notable performances include his work in We're the Millers, The Bear, The Maze Runner, and Midsommar.

Another actor who has reprised his role in Plaything is Asim Chaudhry. Both in Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and Plaything, he played the role of Mohan Thakur, CEO of Tuckersoft employs Colin Ritman. Chaudhry's other works include People Just Do Nothing, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, and appearances in Happy New Year, Colin Burstead, and Wonder Woman 1984. Other actors in key roles in Plaything include Peter Capaldi as the older Cameron Walker in 1934, Lewis Gribben as the young Cameron Walker in 1994, and James Nelson-Joyce as DCI Kano.

There is another episode of the latest season that is a continuation of a previous episode. It looks like this season, the creators have taken a slight detour from the strict rules of the anthology and made two sequel episodes. However, that has not affected the show's success. Fans have appreciated the twist greatly. The sixth episode of the season, USS Callister: Into Infinity, is a sequel to the season four episode USS Callister.

The sequel episode starts right after the events of the original episode and follows the crew of the multiplayer game as they explore the world of Infinity. As clones in the game, they face various obstacles and have to find ways to overcome them, even death.

Black Mirror Season 7 is streaming on Netflix.
