All Creatures Great and Small Season 5 cast and character guide: Who plays whom in the latest season of the drama series

Following the beloved stories in James Herriot's books, All Creatures Great and Small has returned with Season 5. The PBS drama series debuted in September 2020 and offers a look into the lives of veterinarians in the Yorkshire Dales during the 1930s.

All Creatures Great and Small highlights the connection between animals and humans, especially through its main character James Herriot, played by actor Nicholas Ralph. As seen at the beginning of the show, James's journey begins as a veterinary surgeon in the Yorkshire Dales, and he encounters several cases about bout: pet and farm animals.

What makes this drama stand out among others is the blend of a captivating narrative with humorous moments during James' interactions with the local community. However, he isn't the only key character in the show, as All Creatures Great and Small Season 5 is incomplete without some of the fan-adored members of the Skeldale House family.

As mentioned above, the episodes of All Creatures Great and Small Season 5 have arrived, and fans might be curious about the actors playing their favorite characters. Here's a list of the main characters involved in the British comedy-drama:

1) James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph)

The list has to begin with the titular character James Herriot, portrayed by Nicholas Ralph. Since the first season, Herriot has encountered notable challenges as a veterinarian but always ensured to help others.

As seen in All Creatures Great and Small Season 5 Episode 1 "To All Our Boys", James is working as the trainer at the RAF (Royal Air Force), and by the end of the episode, he receives his discharge papers and reunites with his family.

While Ralph is currently seen playing James Herriot, he has also been a part of other projects including Outlander, in which he played .W. MacKenzie. The Scottish actor also contributed to Prey for the Devil (2022), The Most Reluctant Covert (2021), and a few more.

Rachel Shenton's Helen Herriot is the beloved wife of James Herriot. The two became parents to their baby boy Jimmy, and Helen was surprised to see her husband return in Season 5 Episode 1.

Apart from being a new mother, Helen also has the responsibility to look after the veterinary clinic, and she has been managing things quite well. However, this doesn't mean that the couple won't face any more challenges, as this is just the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.

3) Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West)

Since most of the key figures have returned for All Creatures Great and Small Season 5, how can we not expect Samuel West's Siegfried Farnon to appear? He has been a mentor to the titular character James and is seen carrying out his job as a surgeon notably well.

Siegfried's younger brother now has a mustache and has made his way to the latest season after serving at the Royal Veterinary Corps. While he's a responsible veterinarian, Tristan's presence in All Creatures Great and Small adds to the show's comedic elements.

1) Mrs. Pumphrey (Patricia Hodge): Best known for being the owner of Tricki Woo, a Pekingese dog, Mrs. Pumphrey has also returned to the series.

2) Mr. Bosworth (Jeremy Swift): The Season 5 premiere opens with Mr. Bosworth, a Darrowby's Air Raid Precaution (ARP) Warden who's determined to protect the community in tough times.

3) Miss Grantley (Juliet Aubrey): Among the few new faces in the latest season is Aubrey's Miss Grantley, who serves as an archeologist.

4) Doris (Caroline Menton): Actress Caroline Mentoon has also joined the cast of All Creatures Great and Small Season 5 as a newcomer.
