Creature Commandos Season 1 episode 6 Easter eggs
1) The introduction of Rupert Thorne
Rupert Thorne, a classic Gotham crime boss, plays a crucial role in the episode. He is seen funding Alex Sartorius' nuclear research. Thorne manipulates Sartorius into working with him but betrays him later.
In the show, Thorne is responsible for Sartorius’s transformation into Doctor Phosphorus. In the DC Comics, Thorne is a corrupt city official who crosses paths with Batman multiple times.
2) Doctor Phosphorus's origin story
Creature Commandos episode 6 depicts Doctor Phosphorus's backstory, showing how he went from being a family man and scientist to a dangerous villain. The transformation happens due to a deadly accident when he is exposed to a nuclear explosion.
The incident changes him into a fiery and glowing monster. In the comics, the character has a similar origin story and transforms due to an accident caused by Rupert Thorne.
3) Gotham City’s DCU debut
This episode marks Gotham City's first appearance in the new DCU. Doctor Phosphorus is traditionally tied to the city and is seen as an enemy of Batman. This connects Creature Commandos to the larger DC universe and shows how classic places and villains from the comics fit into the new world of DC.
4) The country of Bialya
In the episode, the country of Bialya is seen as an oppressive regime. Sartorius's wife Parvin fears that Thorne will hand over Sartorius's research to this government, which will use it for evil purposes.
This fictional country has a dark history in DC Comics as it has dealt with superpowered criminals and was controlled by a dictator who was eventually overthrown. In the comics, the country is located in the Middle East beside Iran and Saudi Arabia.
5) Batman arrives in the DCU
One of the highlights of the episode is Batman arriving to confront Doctor Phosphorus. The superhero’s cameo marks his entry into the DCU. Though there is already a live-action Batman film franchise starring Robert Pattinson, it is not a part of the DCU.
In Creature Commandos, Batman’s silhouette is illuminated by a flash of lightning, which mirrors a classic scene from Batman: The Animated Series. With his introduction, the superhero is now ready for greater things in the DCU.
6) The Green Lantern and Red Devil references
In one scene of the episode, a magazine titled Meta is visible, featuring women dressed up like comic book characters. One woman is dressed as Star Sapphire, a villain from Green Lantern comics, and another looks like Red Devil, a character from Firestorm. These comic nods are fun references for longtime DC fans and link the show to the wider comic lore.
7) The Penguin’s Club makes an appearance
Dr. Phosphorus’s story also introduces the audience to the Iceberg Lounge, a well-known location in Gotham City that belongs to The Penguin, an iconic Batman villain and the protagonist of the eponymous live-action Max series. This place was first introduced in the comics in 1995. In the show, the lounge is the place where Phosphorus goes on a crime spree.
Creature Commandos Season 1 will air its final episode on January 9, 2025.
