Tom Hiddleston first appeared as Loki in Thor (2011), and that character has been one of his career-defining roles. He portrayed Loki on screen for almost over a decade, and it was in 2023, with the season finale of Loki, that seemingly marked his last appearance as this character.
With the finale of Loki being one of the most dramatic and intense climaxes in the history of MCU, Hiddleston was naturally emotional as he said to Jimmy Falon,
“It all comes full circle.”
Talking about the finale, Hiddleston mentioned to Variety,
“I just felt this wash of relief because it had been a very meaningful experience. That sense of... the exhale. It’s changed the whole course of my life, no question.”
Let us now explore in detail what else Hiddleston had said about Loki post the ending of the show and how that emotionally wrenching finale came to be.
Loki Season 2 finale was initially planned differently
The way Loki wrapped up left a profound emotional impact not only on the characters but also on the fans. However, that was not the plan from the beginning. In the documentary Marvel Studios: Assembled – The Making of Loki season 2, Aaron Moorhead, the co-director of Loki said,
“There was a draft of the script of the very end, the very end. Something wasn't sitting right with both of us about it.”
He then added,
“And the issue was, this draft didn't have Loki destroying the Loom. He saved the Loom from imploding and then ascended the throne. We all knew something was up, we just didn't know what. 'Cause it was like, well he's trying to save the Loom, he gets the throne, all of this.”
He further said,
“But the problem was, is that he didn't have the sacrifice and we realized, why doesn't he destroy the Loom and then have to take over the Loom's massive responsibility? He doesn't get anything out of it. It seems so obvious now, it seems like exactly the right choice. But that was a watershed moment in the development of it, when we realized Loki needs to destroy and become the Loom.”
The sacrifice in the finale worked really as was evident from the reaction of the fans. However, what seems even more impactful is the fact that the finale and what Hiddleston said after that seemingly hints at the end of his appearance in the MCU. Post the finale, Hiddleston said,
“It's the conclusion to season 2, it's also the conclusion to seasons 1 and 2. It's also the conclusion to six films and 12 episodes and 14 years of my life. 14 years. I was 29 when I was cast, I'm 42 now. It's been a journey.”
Talking about his last moment on Loki and the final dialogues he had, Hiddleston mentioned to Variety,
“In his last moment, he gets agency. He gets to decide what his life has represented up until this point. His final utterance is one of profound love and generosity. That the journey of a thousand miles has led us here. It was very satisfying and moving for me too, because it’s been such a long journey.”
While fans have not stopped speculating about Hiddleston’s return to the MCU, besides an appearance of the character in What If…? Season 3 there has been no official update yet regarding the same and for now it seems that Loki marked the end of Hiddleston’s character in the universe.
Loki can be streamed on Disney+.
