X-Men '97, the reboot of the classic X-Men: The Animated Series, has had some thrilling news about its future. As per Lenore Zann, the voice of Rogue in the series, Season 3 is already under production while Season 2 will be released in 2026.

This news follows the success of the first season that was released in March 2024, which was well-received for its good writing and the return of original voice actors. Zann recently gave an update on the upcoming seasons, stating that recording for Season 2 has already been completed.

The production schedule indicates that there may not be as much wait time between Seasons 2 and 3 for the fans as it was between Seasons 1 and 2. Further, Zann also stated that Matt Chauncey has become the new head writer and showrunner for the series, showing a seamless change in creative leadership.

The ongoing production momentum reveals Marvel's dedication to the animated series after a positive reception. This fast-tracked schedule brings relief to the fans worried about long intervals between new episodes of the mutant-themed show that has managed to encapsulate the original 1990s series' nostalgia and essence.

In addition to this news about Season 2, she asserted that production for Season 3 is already in progress. Zann also expressed a personal bond with the new creative team by declaring:

"I met Matt Chauncey, who's our new head writer and showrunner, and I've met a lot of the writers, well, all of them, actually. It's great".

She also revealed that Chauncey was interested in her just-released memoir titled A Rogue's Tale, which he handed out as Christmas gifts to the writers. This move shows the new showrunner's dedication to honoring the character's history and Zann's view of Rogue.

Release Schedule for future seasons

The release plan for future seasons of X-Men '97 is getting clearer following recent comments from the major stakeholders in the show. Based on the details given by Lenore Zann, Season 2 will be released in 2026. This was also reinforced by Marvel Studios' Head of Streaming Brad Winderbaum, who added:

"Season 2 of X-Men '97 is going to be in '26. We're working on it now".

Since Season 1 was released in March 2024, this means about a two-year wait between the first and second seasons. But with Season 3 already underway while Season 2 is held up for release, industry insiders predict that the time difference between season 3 and 3 of X-Men '97 will be smaller compared to Season 1 and 2.

This increased production pace could result in the fans having a more regular sequence of releases once the first prolonged wait for Season 2.

Creative direction under new showrunner

The creative helm of X-Men '97 has now passed into the hands of Matt Chauncey, who has become head writer and showrunner. Based on the search results, this leadership shift seems to be going well, with support from both Lenore Zann and Brad Winderbaum indicating that "the new writing team seems to have a good handle on what made X-Men '97 a success".

As opposed to some of the other Marvel productions like Daredevil: Born Again, there is "no indication that the animated series is in for a radical overhaul," which means the audience can anticipate consistency with the style and tone that made Season 1 successful. Winderbaum's passion for the project is apparent when he says:

"That world of the '90s is just… Honestly. I can't believe they let me make it. I grew up at Marvel. and I feel like I used a lot of currency to revive this thing that I loved watching after school".

This passion on the part of leadership and a stable creative lead indicate that the seasons moving forward will hold onto things the fans liked from Season 1.

X-Men '97 enthusiasts can already anticipate Season 2 in 2026 with Season 3 afterwards on an ideally shorter timeline. With already ongoing production under new showrunner Matt Chauncey and ongoing participation by original voice actors such as Lenore Zann, the show seems set to capitalize on its successful renewal while securing creative continuity with its initial season.
