Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is in production, and it will feature Star Trek's very own Yoda. No, it's not a new character getting added to the franchise. It is the Doctor, first seen in Star Trek: Voyager. Robert Picardo is reprising his role as the Doctor, who initially started as an Emergency Medical Hologram but then mentored cadets in Star Trek: Prodigy.
He will mentor cadets in the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series as well. The Burn almost destroyed the United Federation of Planets, and the new cadets do not know what the academy was like before The Burn. Being their mentor, The Doctor will help them reconnect with the academy's legacy. Since the upcoming show is set in the 32nd century, it will make The Doctor around 800 years old, which is close to Yoda's age when he died, making him a Yoda-like character in Star Trek.
How is The Doctor a version of Yoda in Star Trek?
Yoda is a humanoid alien who trained Jedi younglings and masters like Luke Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. He is not human but goes on to live for nine hundred years, attaining wisdom and experience that help him in training others.
The Doctor is first introduced as an Emergency Medical Hologram who would offer his assistance if the ship's doctor were injured or incapable of helping. However, his experience, memory, and the way he adapted to human feelings made him a perfect candidate for a trainer. He was seen to train cadets in Star Trek: Prodigy and will do the same for cadets in the upcoming series. The fact that he is not human and can contain a huge amount of memory will help him train cadets in the right way.
Robert Picardo recently spoke on TrekTalks4, which benefits the Hollywood Food Coalition. In conversation with his Star Trek: Voyager co-star Kate Mulgrew, Picardo talked about how he is Star Trek's version of Yoda. As transcribed by TrekMovie, Picardo said,
“You know, Yoda, I think, was 900 when he finally died. So I do think of myself as the Yoda of the Star Trek franchise. And look, it could be worse, I could be short and green and made out of rubber. So I think I do look pretty good.”
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is in production. It will star Karim Diané, George Hawkins, Kerrice Brooks, Sandro Rosta, Bella Shepard, and Zoë Steiner as the cadets. The names of their characters have not been revealed yet. Tig Notaro and Robert Picardo return as Jett Reno and The Doctor, respectively. Paul Giamatti is joining the cast as well and is rumored to be playing the antagonist in the series. Robert Picardo. Holly Hunter is joining the cast as Chancellor and Captain of Starfleet Academy.
Tatiana Maslany is joining the cast too, and her role is the most anticipated one since so little is known about who she is playing. Maslany did not reveal which character she is playing, but she spoke with Collider about her experience working on the series, saying,
“Oh my god, I love Kerrice! Kerrice is unbelievable. The whole cast, the whole set is people not like Kerrice—Kerrice is obviously very unique; no one’s like her—but everyone is such a great character. There’s so much heart in the show. I had such a blast working on it. Holly Hunter is my hero. I couldn’t believe I got to work with her. Broadcast News is, again, one of those performances that is just beyond. Paul Giamatti is a total delight.”
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has finished filming season 1, and a second season has been confirmed. It is predicted to be released in 2026 on Paramount Plus.
