John Foster, a resident of Addis and an LSU student, secured a spot in the Top 14 on American Idol season 23 after his weekend performance.
The contestant delivered a performance on his original song that he wrote in memory of a loving friend in Maggie Dunn, one of the cheerleaders who were killed during a deadly crash by a Brusly police officer.
Maggie's mother was also interviewed on the show, and she revealed how John and her daughter became friends in middle school. She shared that the two had always loved and supported each other through thick and thin.
She had taught the kids during her time at Brusly High, and Maggie had even attended John's first gig where he wore a cream colored cowboy hat.
During his performance on the latest episodes of American Idol, John could be seen wearing the same hat while delivering the performance for his best friend on stage with a song called "Tell That Angel I Love Her."
American Idol contestant John Foster delivers a performance for his late friend Maggie Dunn
John Foster tried to keep the memory of his friend, Maggie Dunn, alive on stage during the American Idol performance. He sang an original song he wrote three years ago at the time of Maggie's death.
It was in 2022 that Maggie Dunn and Caroline Gill were entangled in a car crash on New Year's Eve. It was when an Addis police officer, who was chasing a suspect around the Brusly area, ran a red light.
This caused him to crash into Dunn's vehicle in a fatal accident that killed both the girls inside it. It happened on La. 1 around the police station.
The entire deal was a lot to take in for the Brusly community, as Maggie, who was a cheerleader at the time, had died along with Caroline. Her brother was also in the car and was injured but survived the crash. The school's cheerleading team released a statement at the time saying,
"As we mourn the tragic deaths of Maggie Dunn and Caroline Gill, please keep their families, friends, and the BHS community in your thoughts and prayers. Their enthusiasm and bright smiles will be missed more than can be imagined."
The police officer who was involved in the crash was sentenced to 42 years in prison on account of manslaughter and one count of negligent injury. He had pleaded guilty. It was reported that his car's speed was 86 miles per hour, and he had never hit the brakes before the crash.
American Idol contestant John Foster has maintained close ties to Maggie's family, especially her mother. Reminiscing about the time when they were still dealing with her death, John had sent them a video of the song, "Tell That Angel I Love Her."
She was in the crowd when he was singing the same at stage. The performance had taken him through the Top 20 and landed John a spot among the 14 contestants to move forward.
American Idol season 23 episodes can be watched weekly on Sundays and Mondays at 8 PM Eastern Time on ABC. Later, the episodes are available to stream via Hulu.
