The previous episode, Val’s Story, follows Val Pierce, played by Cobie Smulders, who is accused of killing her ex-husband, Trey, with electrocution. Val, who shares a son with Trey, suffered domestic violence during her marriage and decided to leave her husband.

The prosecutors label the domestic violence as the motive behind Trey’s murder, pointing out that Val entered Trey’s house moments before his death. However, it is revealed that Val did not kill her ex-husband.

Instead, she went to his home to get back an expensive sculpture, found him unconscious, and tried to save him with CPR before suffering a panic attack and fleeing the scene. The real culprit is Jordan, Trey’s current wife, who also faced domestic violence at his hands.

Jordan confesses to the murder during Val’s trial, leading to the latter’s acquittal. However, Val feels she should help Jordan as they share the same traumas. She tells the prosecutor that she would testify she killed her ex-husband.

This puts the trial in jeopardy as Val can not be retried since she has already been acquitted. Hence, both Val and Jordan are able to walk free and none of them goes to prison.
