The Rookie Season 7 Episode 14 saw the return of hitman Malvado, who earlier took out Bailey's ex-husband Jason, with her help.
Since season 7's inception, Bailey had been dealing with Jason's escape from prison, and when things got too out of hand for her, she made a difficult decision and aided Malvado, a known criminal, to kill Jason.
While she managed to keep this a secret between her and Nolan, Malvado's return in The Rookie's latest episode made things difficult for her. Discussing Malvado's return, showrunner Alexi Hawley discussed how it was linked to Bailey's trauma with Collider:
''[It] was a storyline that was about the trauma of her abuse, that she didn't even realize how deep it went, until Movado presented himself, until Jason was basically out there trying to kill her.''

The Rookie showrunner breaks down Malvado's return and his connection with Bailey in Episode 14
The Rookie Season 7 Episode 14 had Nolan and Bailey reeling with fear after Malvado resurfaced, and the LAPD team was after him. After Tim is listed as a target on a dark website, his search leads him to other hitmen like Malvado, and the crimes are ultimately tied to the hitmen Bailey helped take out her ex-husband.
While Bailey's unconventional and unlawful approach to taking out her ex-husband created a rift in her relationship with Nolan, he eventually understood, and the couple moved past Jason's trauma in The Rookie Episode 7.
However, with Malvado's return, Bailey was fearful that the hitman would use her as leverage. Talking about Bailey's part in Jason's death, Hawley discussed with Collider:
''That storyline really was Bailey's trauma and sort of what it sort of drove her to do...technically, she didn't give up anything...ultimately he [Malvado] ended up tracking Jason down on his own, for the most part.''
While Bailey did not kill Jason herself, she did actively aid and abet a known hitman, who ultimately took her ex-husband out. But considering Hawley's comments, Bailey's action, albeit questionable, highlights the trauma Jason had on her and the means she was ready to resort to to get rid of him.
Talking to TV Insider, Hawley further discussed Bailey's fear after Malvado's return:
''Malvado being sort of this primal fear-based action that she took and the impact that that had on her storyline and her relationship with Nolan was the thing that was the most interesting...So that being said, yes, I think at the end of the day, the spark of fear that comes from him being back around again was important.''
He added:
“It was really an emotional storyline for her about with Jason’s escape and him coming for her and having her have to face some things that she actually hadn’t admitted to herself about what Jason had put her through.''
In The Rookie Season 7 Episode 14, Tim and Nolan eventually track Malvado down before he can cut his last loose end. And while it looked like the hitman would have the upper hand over the duo, Angela intervenes and fatally shoots Malvado in the chest, bidding goodbye to Bailey's threat forever.
