Abbott Elementary Season 4 has aired its finale, and audiences are now awaiting updates on the fifth season. The hit sitcom continues to be one of the most popular shows on ABC.
It tells the story of an underfunded and predominantly Black school, where the optimistic teachers try their best to make the best out of the scarce resources. In the fourth season, the drama went up a notch as school principal Ava was fired from her job due to a bribery scandal.

Abbott Elementary has been renewed for a fifth season. ABC announced the continuation of the mockumentary sitcom in January 2025. At the time, a video was posted on the show’s official social media handles featuring the school’s students. The caption read:

The renewal did not come as a surprise, as the series has consistently garnered good ratings and critical acclaim. The first season averaged 3.84 million viewers, which increased to 3.96 million by the third chapter.
Meanwhile, the show made waves at prestigious awards like the Emmys and the Golden Globes. The extremely positive response led ABC to announce Season 5 well before the fourth installment’s finale.
Abbott Elementary Season 5: Potential release date
The official release date of the upcoming season has yet to be announced. However, it is confirmed to be a part of ABC’s 2025-2026 schedule. The first season began in December 2021, and the second and fourth seasons premiered in the fall of 2022 and 2024, respectively.
The third installment was delayed due to the Hollywood strikes and debuted in February 2024. If everything goes well, Abbott Elementary Season 5 will likely premiere in the fall of 2025.
Series creator and star Quinta Brunson has previously expressed that the team likes to coordinate the show’s release schedule with a typical school year, and hence, the fifth season could debut by late September or early October 2025. However, we need to wait for an official announcement by ABC.
Abbott Elementary Season 5: Possible storyline
While no official synopsis is out yet, Abbott Elementary Season 5 will certainly continue the story of the teachers and students of the underfunded school as they face new challenges and make new memories.

Meanwhile, there is some doubt over Matthew Law’s return as O'Shon since the actor has bagged a role in a new Netflix series. Talking about whether Law will appear in Abbott Elementary Season 5, executive producer Patrick Schumacker said in an interview with The Wrap:
“That’s the hope — that schedules work out and all that. He’s just fantastic in the show — a lovely human [and we] want to work with him all the time as well. Hopefully, it being a Netflix show, for our sake, it’s a shorter order and he becomes available for us.”
