The fourth season of Abbott Elementary recently concluded on ABC. While the fourth season of Abbott Elementary highlighted commendable performances from the leading characters, including Eva, Gregory, and Janine, the episode titled Please Touch Museum brought out an unexpected comeback from a character that ended up being immensely memorable and poignant.
The 22nd episode of Abbott Elementary season four featured Orlando Jones reprising his role as Martin Eddie, i.e., Gregory Eddie's father. Here's everything that we know.
Orlando Jones' return to Abbott Elementary season 4 explained
As per a ScreenRant report, the 22nd episode of Abbott Elementary season four was actually filmed on location at the historic Please Touch Museum located in Philadelphia. The narrative of the episode follows Gregory and Janine taking the children of the school to a field trip, wherein they are also joined by Martin. Janine initially tried to put up a facade of being tough, all in order to impress Martin.
Since Martin is a former army officer, Janine thought that being something that she is not would lead to Martin appreciating her. However, when one of her students is accidentally injured, Janine decides to drop the act altogether and once again shines forth in her loving and caring demeanor. This culminated with Martin wholeheartedly appreciating her for who she was.
The comeback of Martin also brought out a nuanced exchange following the father-son duo. Growing up without his mother under the care of a single father, Gregory came to think of Martin as an otherwise reserved man. However, meeting Janine for the first time, Martin was delighted to note that she reminded him of his wife and Gregory's mother, thus leading to a memorable moment shared by the father and the son.
Abbott Elementary creator opens up about the ABC show
In a recently released exclusive interview with Deadline, creator Quinta Brunson opened up about the ABC show's season four finale, shedding light on the relationship between Gregory and Janine:
"I think we were looking for fun ways to advance them in the finale, and we really missed Orlando (Jones), and we know that schools always need chaperones for field trips, so it kind of was a great way to go ahead and bring a huge element for their relationship — meeting a parent is such a big deal. So it felt like just a fun opportunity to have that happen here."
She was then asked about her approach to fleshing out the characters of Janine and Gregory, to which Brunson replied:
"We have to find unique ways, because it’s not like other workplace romances, specifically these two characters who are focused on doing a good job at teaching and aren’t going to bring their romance into the workplace as maybe some other workplace sitcoms typically would. So it meant leaving the school a couple of times. That was what was really fun with the karaoke episode, was kind of advancing their relationship in that one, because you get to see them be a little bit more open and have real-deal relationship problems."
