The miniseries is part of Amazon's scandal series, co-produced by the BBC. Other installments in this series include A Very English Scandal and A Very British Scandal. Although the producers are the same, the series are not connected to each other.

The series will dramatize the events leading up to Emily Maitlis's 2019 BBC interview with Prince Andrew regarding his association with Jeffrey Epstein. Prince Andrew, the Duke of York and second son of Queen Elizabeth II, is part of the British Royal Family.

Jeffrey Epstein was an American financier, charged with sexually assaulting women and children, and running a sex trafficking ring involving minors.

The 2019 interview was conducted for BBC Two's Newsnight. It was widely regarded as a disastrous interview for Prince Andrew, drawing significant negative publicity and global reactions.

Conversely, the interview was a notable career moment for Emily Maitlis, earning her several awards at the Royal Television Society Awards.

The miniseries will debut five months after Netflix's Scoop, which covered the BBC interview from a different perspective. A Very Royal Scandal will offer viewers a new lens on the interview.
