Love is Blind season 8 is streaming on Netflix right now, and amidst the same, creator Chris Coelen has opened up about what sets this installment apart from the previous ones.
The show first premiered on Netflix back in 2020, and it has been five years and eight seasons since then. This time, viewers noticed how the conversation during the pods also included the couples who did not end up getting engaged.
Some criticized the idea because the whole thing took six episodes, while others appreciated seeing the other side of the coin.
During an interview with Variety, Chris was asked about the maturity of this season's cast and how there were many mutual connections between them all.
Noting the distinction, Chris said that they had the most mature season with the cast from Seattle, but it also had "mean girls" like "Micah and Irina." He said that during that time, people thought this was all done by the producers to cause drama, but that was not the case. Then, talking about the Minneapolis group, Chris said,
"My point is that two things can be equally true — one of the most mature seasons and there was also a very juvenile thing happening in the pods. Every single group of people have their own vibe. This was a really supportive group."
Love is Blind creator Chris Coelen differentiates the season 8 cast from the rest
We have seen how Lauren's ex "friends with benefits" guy somehow ended up shifting in the same apartment complex as the Love is Blind couples, and then Dave had mutuals with him. Talking about the effect, Chris said that casting in Minneapolis gave him the "small-town feel."
It was because,
"A lot of people know a lot of people," he stated.
He also indicated that there are some connections on the show, hinting at Dave and Lauren, as well as how people already knew Ben had left for Love is Blind, and a girl made a TikTok about him.
Navigating the conversation towards the pod conversation that took place during the initial phase of the Love is Blind experiment, Chris said that increasing the time or the episode was not something they had planned earlier. He said that it all worked out during editing.
They try to pick the stories they feel are "worthy of telling." Talking about the love triangles and how, this time, there were quite a few of them on the Love is Blind season 8, Chris said,
"There are unbelievable love triangles. When we first started making the show, we thought we didn’t have time to tell stories of love triangles. But we now embrace the fact that it’s incredibly emotional, dramatic, messy and aspirational."
This time, the creators put the story of the pod connections that did not make it out of the show, such as the one with Madison, Alex, Mason, and Meg.
Chris says that this was new and "really exciting" because fabs are always curious about what happened with these couples later. Explaining how entertaining it could be, Chris remarked,
"I could probably make 30 episodes of pods and it would be fascinating."
Then, talking about the music for this season, Chris said that they put extra effort into selecting the soundtracks. Given the fact that it's their "fifth anniversary," they decided to "lean into celebrating the great love songs."
