The Disney+ hit Star Wars series Andor features several remarkable female characters who stay with the audience long after the show has ended. From the sophisticated senator Mon Mothma (played by Genevieve O'Reilly), working underground with the rebels, to Dedra Meero (played by Denise Gough), the Imperial Officer rigorously working to establish the Galactic Empire’s rule, the women on the show have time and again established their authority, which continues in Andor Season 2 as well.

At the recent Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Genevieve O'Reilly praised creator Tony Gilroy for writing some of the best roles for women in Andor. She told CBR:

“… he’s written a cast of brilliant womenThere are many of us in this show, both in Season 1 and Season 2, so what that allows us to do, is not just to play the woman. We get to be the women.”

A look at the badass women of the hit Star Wars series Andor

1) Maarva Andor

Maarva Carassi Andor (played by Fiona Shaw) was a humanitarian, a beloved community member on Ferrix, and a rebel hero. She was the former president of the Daughters of Ferrix, a social club for the citizens of the planet. She was married to Clem (played by Gary Beadle), along with whom she adopts Cassian Andor (played by Diego Luna) from the planet Kenari. Clem was killed by the imperial authorities, which devastated her.

During the funeral at Ferrix, a recorded hologram of Maarva would inspire her fellow Ferrix citizens to rise and rebel against the Empire. Cassian was greatly influenced by his mother and became a part of the Rebel Alliance.

Maarva's recorded message was played at her funeral in Season 1, Episode 12:

“The Empire is a disease that thrives in darkness, it is never more alive than when we sleep."

2) Mon Mothma

Mon Mothma is a political figure from the planet Chandrila. She advocates for bringing down military presence in the galaxy and establishing peace. She disagrees with Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine’s method of governing the Galaxy. She uses her family wealth and political strategies to support the underground resistance movement against the Galactic Empire.

Mon Mothma is one of the key figures in establishing the rebel movement against the Empire. After the Empire falls, Mon Mothma would go on to become the first Chancellor of the New Republic and help the galaxy to get back on its feet.

Mon Mothma in Season 1, Episode 7 shares about being cut-throat in her political career:

“I’ve learned from Palpatine. I show you the stone in my hand, you miss the knife at your throat.”

3) Bix Caleen

On Ferrix, Bix Caleen (played by Adria Arjona) ran a business that involved tearing apart old, useful tech scraps and selling the refurbished parts. She has been working with the underground rebel movement, assisted by Luthen Rael, played by Stellan Skarsgård.

She is a close friend of Cassian Andor, who would seek her help to sell an Imperial NS-9 Starpath Unit that he had stolen. The Imperial Security Bureau follows Cassian’s movements and comes to know about the stolen item. Bix is captured and tortured by them to reveal all information about Cassian and the buyer. Ultimately, Cassian rescues her and hides in Mina-Rau.

A broken Bix Caleen still holds out hope in Season 1, Episode 12, when she tells fellow Ferrix people escaping from the planet:

“He'll find us. Cassian will find us."

4) Dedra Meero

The ambitious and ruthless Dedra Meero is an officer of the Imperial Security Bureau. She lives on the city planet Coruscant. She is fixated on establishing the Empire’s brutal laws, even at the price of humanity. When she learns about the theft of an Imperial N-S9 Starpath Unit in Ferrix, she sets out on a hunt to find Cassian Andor and the rebel code-named Axis (aka Luthen Rael).

Due to her stringent and merciless ways, she manages to climb the ranks but also makes enemies on the way. Despite the rebellion in Ferrix, Meero catches the attention of Director Orson Krennic (played by Ben Mendelsohn), who adds her to the elite group of officers working to create the Death Star.

Dedra Meero employs brutal methods to coax Bix into revealing the truth about Cassian Andor. She intimidates her in Season 1, Episode 9 by saying:

“The very worst thing you can do right now is bore me.”

5) Vel Sartha

Vel Sartha (played by Faye Marsay) is the cousin of Mon Mothma, who shares the same ideologies and has been working against the Empire. Despite belonging to a wealthy family, she gives up the luxuries to take up the life of a rebel operative. She is part of Luthen’s rebel network.

She is the leader of the rebel group working in Aldani to steal the Imperial payroll from the armory. As a socialite from Chandrila, she plays the role of the perfect rich girl while spying on the senators and planning the next move.

Vel Sartha displays her leadership skills when she speaks to her fellow rebels in Aldani to fight against the Empire in Season 1, Episode 6:

“One path! One choice. We win, or everyone dies."

6) Kleya Marki

Kleya Marki (played by Elizabeth Dulau) runs Luthen Rael’s rebel spy network from his Galactic Antiquities and Objects of Interest gallery in Coruscant, where she works as a concierge.

With her straight face and calm demeanor, she would carry out her work without a snag. She is responsible for tracking the rebel movements and working with Luthen and Mon Mothma.

In Season 1, Episode 11, Kleya Marki informs Luthen that she is not leaving anything to chance and is preparing for the rebel movement:

“I'm preparing for every outcome.”

7) Cinta Kaz

A member of the rebel movement operated by Luthen Rael, Cinta Kaz (played by Varada Sethu), is a part of the team led by Vel Satha in Aldhani. They share a romantic relationship.

Cinta appears as a strong rebel who is determined to bring down the Empire by any means possible. She even prioritizes the rebel movement above her personal relationships.

In Season 1, Episode 8, Cinta Kaz makes it clear to Vel Satha that for her, the rebellion comes first:

“I told you upfront the struggle will always come first. We take what's left.”

Andor is a Star Wars spinoff series created by Tony Gilroy. The show is a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). Andor Season 2 is currently streaming on Disney+.
