A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the newest spinoff in The Game of Thrones universe. Yes, it is expanding yet again, and fans are in for a treat! HBO is all ready to drop another spinoff with a promise to bring forth a change that was not done before.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will come to our screens early next year. This new show will take us into the rich history of Westeros. The story takes place roughly 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones and 80 years after the events of House of the Dragon.
The new spinoff is based on the Dunk & Egg novellas by George R.R. Martin. We will see the adventures of two interesting characters, Dunk (Ser Duncan the Tall) and Egg (a young Aegon V Targaryen) as they travel across Westeros.
This time, it’s going to be more intimate and character-driven, which immediately sets it apart from the epic battles and large-scale dramas we’ve seen before.
Here’s everything we know about the scale of the next Game of Thrones spinoff.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes a different approach
One of the biggest critiques of House of the Dragon was its smaller scope compared to Game of Thrones. When it comes to the scale and the grandeur that originally defined Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon toned it down a bit, though it did not have a dearth of political drama, which is the central theme of both the series.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms seems to be going even further towards a more centralized and intimate direction. According to George R.R. Martin, the new spinoff will have a lower budget, focussing on a smaller and more personal storyline.
Unlike Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, there won’t be grand battles and dragons. Our screens will be quieter this time with the story being more of a character-centric journey.
Think of the dynamic between Arya and The Hound as they wandered across Westeros, that’s the kind of vibe you can expect from Dunk and Egg travels. This approach does not just suit the story but also allows viewers to connect deeply with the main characters. This leads to a more fulfilling experience and makes the adventures and interactions even more engaging.
The shift in scale works for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
When it comes to House of the Dragon, it was clear that there was an effort to replicate the epic tone of Game of Thrones. In Season 1, the centralized storyline worked best as it focused on a smaller group of characters. This is the advantage of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms; it leans more towards this idea of smaller-scale storytelling.
The show will mainly focus on Dunk, a humble knight, and Egg, who is secretly a Targaryen prince. Their journey across Westeros makes them face all sorts of characters, from lords to farmers. This results in creating more depth and richness to the storyline without having to rely on epic wars or dragons.
Being a narrative with a “lower budget” isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The reduced scale lets the show spend more time on the characters and the intricate details of Westeros. It means more opportunities for an intimate portrayal of life in Westeros. This will also give the story some room to breathe and develop naturally.
This could also prove to be a game-changer for the franchise. This show has the potential to stand out in that universe because it’s not trying to replicate the success of its predecessors.
House of the Dragon clearly proved that there’s still an appetite for stories set in Westeros. But the only way to keep audiences interested is to evolve and bring forth newer stories.
Sometimes it’s the simpler stories that leave the biggest impact. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has the potential to do just that. We will see Westeros in a way we’ve never seen before.
