As the LA wildfire continues to damage life and property in the county, Netflix has pledged to donate $10 million to support the relief efforts and help the victims of the tragedy. The streaming platform made the announcement on January 13, 2025, and has been lauded by the fans for the kind move.
Netflix will be splitting the $10 million donation among different foundations and funds, including the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation and the California Community Fund Wildfire Recovery Fund.
The other beneficiaries are World Central Kitchen, Motion Picture and Television Fund, and Entertainment Community Fund. The LA wildfire has been blazing since January 7, 2025, reportedly claiming 24 lives and burning more than 12,000 structures so far.
Netflix donates $10 Million to support the LA wildfire victims
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos released an official statement announcing the $10 million donation and confirmed the streamer will provide the amount to five foundations. Apart from the monetary help, the streaming platform is also helping its employees who have been affected by the natural disaster.
The company is providing temporary housing to its workers who have lost their homes and is also running an employee giving program. Sarandos said in his official statement:
“Beyond this financial contribution, we are directly assisting all of our impacted employees at this incredibly difficult time, including assistance with temporary housing needs for those who lost their homes. We are also continuing to double-match all employee charitable contributions through our employee giving program.”
Sarandos added that Los Angeles is very close to his heart as he has lived in the city for 30 years. Speaking about how the city will bounce back stronger, the executive said:
“The next few years will be a rebuilding time for many of us and it will require creativity, vision, grit and perseverance. Looking around at some of the hardest hit neighborhoods, it is hard to imagine rebuilding — but we will, and we will come back stronger than before.”
Apart from Netflix, several other media companies have also made contributions to the victims. The Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros. Discovery have pledged $15 million each for the cause, while Amazon and Comcast have decided to donate $10 million each.
Fans praise Netflix’s kind gesture
Following the announcement, fans are lauding Netflix on social media. One fan wrote, “a great start,” followed by a clap emoji. Another commented, “That’s good. I hope everyone in the greater Los Angeles, California area recovers from this fire soon.”
One social media also wrote, “That’s wonderful. Imagine that. Just doing something good without making it political.” Another replied, “Netflix's $10 million donation to LA fire relief is a commendable step in aiding the community's recovery.”
Amid the donations and the relief efforts, Los Angeles continues to struggle due to the fires which are yet to be contained. The flames erupted on January 7, 2025, in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood before engulfing a large part of the county due to strong winds and dryness in the atmosphere.
The Palisades Fire has so far reportedly destroyed 23,000 acres and is only 14% contained, while the Eaton Fire has burned over 14,000 acres and is 33% contained. As of now, 24 individuals are confirmed to have died, while 23 others are missing.
Despite the tragedy, the community is coming together in the county. Volunteers are delivering meals and supplies to those who lost their homes, while firefighters are working round the clock trying to contain the fire and carrying out rescue operations.
