9-1-1, Ryan Murphy's procedural drama television series, follows the lives of Los Angeles' finest first responders. While the show mainly focuses on how they help people in the face of calamities and accidents, it also has everything for each character.
Oliver Stark portrays Evan "Buck" Buckley, a firefighter. While Buck has had many romantic relationships on the show, one of the most important personal moments was when he came out as bisexual in season 7.
Not only does Buck realize his sexuality, but he also develops feelings for Tommy, an LAFD Air Operations pilot portrayed by Lou Ferrigno Jr. Tommy returned in season 7 of the show, and Buck met him during the cruise ship disaster when he helped him to locate Bobby and Athena.
While the two were confirmed to be in a romantic relationship at the end of season 7, little progress is shown for them in season 8. It is confirmed that season 8 will focus on Buck and Tommy's relationship.
Buck was initially jealous when Tommy developed a friendship with Eddie, but the two eventually kiss, have their first date, and start dating officially.
Here is everything about their relationship's fate on 9-1-1 Season 8.
Will 9-1-1 season 8 finally focus on Buck and Tommy's relationship?
With the recent episodes giving Tommy enough screen time to progress his relationship with Buck, it seems like 9-1-1 is finally giving their relationship the attention it deserves. Oliver Stark talked about their relationship in a recent interview with Screen Rant,
"Yeah, [Tommy is] in episode 5...and support Buck through some difficult times, but I don't know if he's always that helpful in this scenario. [Laughs] He's a little bit weirded out by some things going on with Buck. And then in episode 6, there's a lot of clarity on where their relationship is at and a lot of truths learned about each other. I think it's going to be a really great episode."
While fans have yet to see Episode 6, 'Confessions,' which could hint at Buck confessing about his fears to Tommy, Episode 5 saw the two of them going on a date and having some Halloween fun.
What does it mean for Buck and Tommy's relationship?
Having just come out as a bisexual man, Buck is still trying to navigate his feelings and fears about dating a man for the first time. While he does have feelings for Tommy, and his relationship with him does highlight his emotional growth on the show, they still have a long way ahead.
While Tommy's future in 9-1-1 is uncertain, given the actor's availability for future episodes. They might have a long run, as suggested by Stark's comments on Tommy's screen presence in season 8.
While season 8 was primarily focused on bringing back Bobby as Station 118's Captain and kicking Gerard out, now seems the perfect time for the show to explore Buck and Tommy's relationship and extend Buck's character arc.
After many failed and casual relationships on the show, Buck might be ready to enjoy a real relationship with someone he can find companionship with. Moreover, Tommy seems like the kind of man Buck needs right now, after all he has endured in his past relationships.
