9-1-1: Nashville, the upcoming drama and the second spin-off of 9-1-1, is going to be released sometime this year. The spin-off is going to be focused on the story of a fire captain in Nashville, his firehouse, and most likely the dispatch and paramedics team of the city.

The 9-1-1 franchise has been a success due to many reasons, primarily its main cast. Ryan Murphy, showrunner for all shows of the franchise, has always picked talented and experienced actors for lead roles. 9-1-1: Nashville has stuck to that quality and has decided to cast actors who already have a noteworthy body of work.

They are taking forward a decade-long tradition thanks to a new casting. 9-1-1: Nashville is going to star Chris O’Donnell as Don Sharpe and Jessica Capshaw as the lead opposite him.

How is 9-1-1: Nashville taking forward a decade-long tradition?

9-1-1: Nashville is taking forward a decade-long tradition through its casting. The franchise, for its first two shows, has cast actors who are already well-known, with an interesting career, in lead roles. It helped enhance the quality of performance and garner attention for the shows.

Ryan Murphy started this tradition by casting Angela Bassett and Peter Krause as LAPD Sergeant Athena Grant and Captain Bobby Nash, respectively, in 9-1-1. This was followed by casting Rob Lowe as Fire Captain Owen Strand and Liv Tyler as Paramedic Captain Michelle Blake on 9-1-1: Lone Star. Murphy has followed the same tradition by casting Chris O’Donnell and Jessica Capshaw in lead roles in 9-1-1: Nashville.

Both 9-1-1: Nashville leads, Chris O’Donnell, and Jessica Capshaw have had extensive careers. They were both seen on the same show, Grey's Anatomy, but did not work on the show at the same time. Chris played Dr. Finn Dandridge, a vet, in nine episodes of Grey's Anatomy. Capshaw joined the show much later.

Chris O'Donnell is best known for playing Dick Grayson aka Robin in Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. O'Donnell is also praised for playing G. Callen on NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles. For his performance on NCIS: Los Angeles. Chris was nominated for the People's Choice Award for Favorite TV Crime Drama Actor in 2017. He is also known for his roles in Cookie's Fortune, Vertical Limit, Scent of a Woman, Mad Love, In Love and War, and Kinsey.

Jessica Capshaw is famously known for playing Dr. Arizona Robbins on Grey's Anatomy for eight seasons (from season 6-season 14). She was initially meant to be a guest star in season 5, but Shonda Rhimes loved her performance and wrote her into the show for future episodes.

Dr. Robbins was a pediatric surgeon at Seattle Grace Hospital (later changed to Grey Sloan Memorial), known for her skills and compassion. She went on to marry Dr. Callie Torres and became a mother to Sofia Robbins Sloan Torres.

Capshaw gained a large fan base by playing a successful queer surgeon on network television. She was one of the very first actors to play a queer character that was a series regular, and not just a guest star for forced representation. Capshaw is also known for her work on The Groomsmen, Holidate, and Tell Me Lies.

9-1-1: Nashville has decided to cast these two actors with noteworthy careers in the lead. O'Donnell is going to be playing fire captain, Don Sharpe. Sharpe's son, much like Owen Strand's, is going to be working with him at the firehouse. In 9-1-1: Nashville, Capshaw's is meant to star opposite O'Donnell, so she will most likely be his wife. Details about Capshaw's character, like her work or background, are yet to be known.

New 9-1-1 episodes come out every Thursday on ABC at 8 pm ET. You can stream the show on Hulu and Disney+. 9-1-1: Nashville will be released sometime in 2025 on ABC.
