The return of deceased characters in television series always raises suspense and interest. In the latest episode of 9-1-1: Lone Star, this concept is taken to a whole new level with the unexpected return of Tommy's late husband, Charles, played by Derek Webster.
This twist comes when Tommy, played by Gina Torres, faces a dire cancer diagnosis. Co-showrunners Tim Minear and Rashad Raisani state that this was something of a long-held desire for a reunion that could allow Tommy the chance to say goodbye to love lost too soon.
The emotional weight of the moment serves as not only an intense exploration of themes in the show but also in setting the stage for the eventual series finale. As the fans are approaching the end of this thrilling season, the plot character's dynamics and leftover storylines promise to produce a strong and dramatic end.
What does Charles's return mean in 9-1-1: Lone Star?
The return of Charles is something of great significance for Tommy as well as to the storyline of 9-1-1: Lone Star. As cited by Raisani,
"I've always believed that Charles was the love of Tommy's life," Raisani says. "And I love [Pastor Trevor, played by D.B. Woodside,] but there was something so deep about the love that she had for Charles, and we lost him too quick. She never got a chance to have her goodbye with him, so we always were craving to give her that chance."
In that respect, the show's writers sought to deliver closure for Tommy who never got the chance to bid farewell after Charles' sudden death from an aneurysm in season two's final episode.
Raisani refers to Charles' return as the "North Star" for planning into the season which perfectly fits together with Tommy's storyline over cancer. Torres said,
"I was happy, happy, happy to see him again," Torres adds of working with Webster again.
"I was not, however, happy under the circumstances of which I get to see him again. So that wasn't the best. But yeah, I couldn't imagine doing it with anyone else."
According to Raisani, they wanted to portray how life may be cut short and how unjust it is when such harsh realities face a person.
Themes of mortality and resilience
The overarching themes of these final episodes revolve around mortality and resilience. As Tommy confronts her cancer diagnosis, she receives a false sense of security about the effectiveness of her treatment. Raisani observes,
"What we wanted to show is that, 'Well, it sucks, but this thing happened and you were in the minority of possibility, but here it is, death is now staring you right in the face. I think we wanted her to have to pay the ultimate cost for the struggle."
Torres teases that viewers will see "the Tommy that you know. right to the end," pointing to her character's resilient spirit. Though things seem very grave for Tommy, he's a fighter and a true representative of strength.
It makes strong connections with the audience who have gone through similar times in their lives, as well as those who had loved ones undergoing grueling treatment for illness.
More suspense has been built as the show reaches its climax in the last show of the season, and an asteroid hits Austin in the finale. Rob Lowe, who plays Owen Strand, sets up conflicts:
"This could be the event where maybe somebody on the team doesn't make it. Everything is on the table."
