9-1-1: Lone Star Season five is gearing up for its upcoming finale, which airs on Monday, February 3 at 8 PM ET on FOX. While the end of the fifth season of 9-1-1: Lone Star edges nearer, it is indeed a heavy moment for everyone among the cast and the crew. The character of Tommy Vega, played by actress Gina Torres, has had it particularly rough throughout this entire season.
The fifth season of 9-1-1: Lone Star saw Tommy Vega being diagnosed with cancer. As she battled her ailment with rigor and resilience, her hopes were slowly crushed upon discovering that there was no treatment that could ameliorate her suffering. Eventually, Tommy had to resign herself to the fact that she was slowly nearing her end.
During the latest episode of 9-1-1: Lone Star, Tommy received some closure after having a heartfelt conversation with her dead husband Charles Vega, played by actor Derek Webster, as the latter comforted her crisis of being confronted by an uneasy sense of mortality.
While speaking in a recent interview with TV Insider, Gina Torres opened up about feeling happy at the opportunity of sharing a scene with Webster once again. This was particularly fulfilling for her as she had been separated from most of the other cast members throughout the fifth season of 9-1-1: Lone Star.
Here's everything that we know.
Gina Torres opens up about working with Derek Webster on 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5
Gina Torres appeared for a 9-1-1: Lone Star aftershow on TV Insider called First Response in which she detailed her experience of working on the show's fifth season. She remarked that it was a lonely journey, stating:
"It’s been incredibly lonely being away from everybody. I remember when I was starting out, Julia Roberts was doing an interview about Steel Magnolias, and when everybody else was shooting her funeral, it was the only time that she had been separated from them and I didn’t really get it and how lonely and sort of out of it she felt."
She then went on to add:
"And then I was shooting all of this whole, literally half the season I’m pretty much away from what everybody’s doing. So those little blips in time, those little moments that I get to seal away, where they come to visit and or Marjan’s (Natacha Karam) wedding, those are great moments where I get to see everyone again."
Speaking about her experience of being reunited with Derek Webster, Gina commented:
"I love Derek. I love working with Derek. He’s a mensch. He’s funny and he’s so generous as an actor and we really just enjoyed each other and the time that we got to spend together again, I mean, it wasn’t easy, but if there’s anyone that I would love to do that dance with, given the circumstances and just the history that we created during my first season, our first season, then yeah, then it was great. It was a wonderful surprise when they told me he was coming back.”
Is Tommy Vega already dead on 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5?
Ahead of the season five finale, it can't be said for certain if Tommy Vega has already succumbed to cancer. However, a comment from showrunner Rashad Raisani had previously hinted that Vega might be still alive for the season finale:
"Our final sequence, which I believe may be the high watermark of our series, is literally every character working together and doing their own part toward the same singular goal… It’s all about one single moment."
