Colin Farrell's The Penguin performance won him his third Golden Globe. The 82nd edition of the prestigious award ceremony was held on January 5th, 2025.
The Max series debuted on September 19, 2024, and was one of the most streamed series on the platform. Farrell reprised his role as Oz Cobb from the Batman movies in this limited series.
82nd Golden Globes for Excellence in Film and American Television Productions of 2024 were hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser. Farrell was nominated for The Penguin on December 9, 2024, at the Beverly Hilton press conference by actors Morris Chestnut and Mindy Kaling.
Farrell underwent a massive transformation for his role and was highly praised for bringing the Gotham underworld to life.
The series follows the events of 2022 The Batman, where the death of crime boss Carmine Falcone left a power vacuum in the underworld of Gotham City. His right-hand man, Oz Cobb, sees this as an opportunity to rise to power and become the next kingpin of Gotham City.
The actor was visibly touched and thanked, especially his makeup team, for bringing Oz to life.
Colin Farrell thanked his makeup team at the 82nd Golden Globes
Farrell has won two Golden Globes prior in the Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy category for his performance in In Burges and The Banshees of Inisherin in 2009 and 2023, respectively.
His performance in The Penguin not only won him his third award but also made him a huge name in the television world. He made sure to thank his makeup team, who transformed him physically into the notorious Oz Cobb on set every day.
It was revealed that Farrell gained a significant amount of weight for his role as Oz and spent approximately three hours on the makeup chair to get into the character of The Penguin. This is how he thanked his makeup artist, Michael Marino, who designed his The Penguin look at the Golden Globes:
''[There's] too many people to thank. You all know, it takes a village, whether it's on the small screen or the big screen. I'm here on the backs of the talents of so many people through the years. Maybe this one more than others because of Mike Marino, who designed the makeup with his extraordinary makeup team.''
He added:
''All it took was three hours in the chair in the morning. I drank black coffee, listened to 80s music, and I became a canvas for that team's brilliance.''
He then went on to thank his co-star Cristin Milliotti, who played Sofia Gigante, and Matt Reeves, who 'created [this re-envisioned Gotham] for the Batman film for the success of their series.
