Investigation Discovery’s show The Fall of Diddy has shaken things up in the world of entertainment, with some pretty serious claims being made about Sean "Diddy" Combs, a big deal in the music industry. The Fall of Diddy is a four-part series with real people who used to work with him or know him, and some folks who say they’ve been hurt by him, telling their stories.
The Fall of Diddy shows a side of Diddy’s life that’s not at all nice. He’s got a big trial coming up in May 2025, where he’ll have to face accusations of s*x trafficking and racketeering. The show has been a real eye-opener and it’s got everyone talking.
Here are five of the most surprising things that people have found out from watching The Fall of Diddy.
5 revelations from The Fall of Diddy docuseries
1) Diddy threatened to kill a former Vibe editor over a magazine cover
One of the most unsettling moments in the docuseries is shared by ex-Vibe editor-in-chief Danyel Smith. Back in 1997, she didn't give in to Sean "Diddy" Combs' insistence that she okay his magazine cover before it hit the stands.
Combs, reportedly infuriated, told her she might find herself "dead in a trunk" if she didn't change her tune. This scared Smith, and she had to get her lawyers involved, who managed to get him to apologize via fax within hours. But that wasn't the end of it. He sent two guys to the Vibe offices to scare her even more.
2) The 1988 Howard University assault incident
Long before he was known around the world, Combs was just a regular student at Howard University. It is said that back then, he had a bit of a temper and was involved in some pretty rough stuff. In The Fall of Diddy, an anonymous interviewee talked about a time when they saw Combs lose it.
He was apparently whipping a girl with a belt right outside her dorm, and it was so bad that she and her roommate yelled for him to quit it. But he didn't listen and just kept going, pulling her into a hidden basement part. This story makes it seem like there's been a pattern of this kind of scary behavior from Combs for a long time.
3) The 1991 celebrity basketball game that turned deadly
Combs’ ambition was to make a big name for himself in the entertainment world. So, he came up with the idea of throwing a super important charity basketball game at New York City College back in 1991. But, things didn’t go as planned. The event ended up being poorly organized and way too many tickets were sold.
This led to a terrible situation where people rushed to get inside and a stampede broke out. It was so sad that nine young fans lost their lives. Some people who were there say that Combs and his crew kept selling tickets even when they knew the place was too full. It became one of the first times that his name was linked to something scandalous in the public eye.
4) Diddy chased a promoter through Manhattan over a T-shirt
During the peak of the rap feud between the East and West Coasts, Combs went to great lengths to show he was the boss in the hip-hop world. In '96, a guy named DeWitt Gilmore, a concert promoter said he got into trouble with Combs just for wearing a shirt from a rival label, Death Row Records, at a party in New York City.
Combs didn't just get mad; he and his crew apparently yelled at Gilmore, and then when Gilmore tried to leave, they shot at him and chased him through the streets of Manhattan like it was a movie scene. Combs cared about his reputation and would do almost anything to keep anyone from messing with it.
5) Diddy’s role in the 1999 club shooting and betrayal of Shyne
Perhaps one of the most notorious events connected to Combs is the 1999 New York club shooting. Combs' ex-driver, Wardel Fenderson, claimed Combs had a gun before the incident. When shots rang out, it was up-and-coming rapper Moses "Shyne" Michael Levi Barrow who took the blame, landing a 10-year prison term.
There's a strong belief that Combs set this up to safeguard his own career, at the cost of Shyne's future. This sheds light on a pattern of Combs possibly controlling those around him to keep his empire afloat, no matter the consequences.
The Fall of Diddy takes a hard look at the alleged darker side of Sean Combs. It shows a pattern of mistreatment, threats, and power that seems to have no limits. As Combs faces ongoing legal battles, The Fall of Diddy has sparked new conversations about fairness in the world of entertainment.
