He may not appear in The Office as often as Jim or Dwight, but Mose’s eccentric antics and childlike innocence makes him an exceptionally memorable character. In The Office, Mose Schrute is Dwight’s cousin, who lives and works on their family’s beet farm.
Mose on The Office was portrayed by Michael Schur, one of the writers and producers on the show. Though the character does not have any speaking lines through the show’s nine seasons run, his slapstick comedy and peculiar personality was one of the highlights. Let’s take a look at some of the best Mose scenes from The Office.
5 most memorable Mose moments from The Office
5) Mose at Dwight’s Daycare
Counseling - Season 7, Episode 2
Dwight Schrute (played by Rainn Wilson) takes the impulse decision to start a daycare centre in the office building. He pitches the idea of Sesame Avenue Daycare Center For Infants and Toddlers to fellow employees Jim (played by John Krasinski) and Pam (played by Jenna Fischer).
When Jim and Pam visit the centre, they are shocked to find Mose standing in the dark painting a wall while carrying a doll as a baby. As Dwight’s understanding of the subject is minimal, the daycare is complete with items such as plastic forks and knives, inapt posters and more.
4) Mose helps with Ryan’s initiation
Initiation - Season 3, Episode 5
Ryan (played by BJ Novak) goes on his first sales call with Dwight, who instead of taking him to the client’s office brings him to his beet farm. He informs him that he is initiating him as a salesman and he has to go through a series of tests for it.
As part of the initiation process, Dwight tells him that he needs to face his fears in order to become a good salesman. Suddenly Mose appears wearing t-shirt that has the word ‘Fear’ written with red tapes. Dwight says that Ryan must wrestle cousin Mose, who is seen getting into position. Ryan however gets angry at the ridiculousness of the situation and walks away.
3) Mose’s professional interview
Junior Salesman - Season 9, Episode 13
Dwight is given the task to find a new part-time salesman at the office so as to fill in for Jim’s absence. Dwight sees it as an opportunity to hire someone who would be loyal to him, and gets his friends and relatives to attend the interview instead.
Mose presents Dwight with his resume where he has exaggerated his profile. In the resume he mentions that he was a sales representative for Dow Chemicals for 15 years, but when Dwight reminds him that they live together and he has never seen him go to work, Mose suddenly gets up and runs away. Mose is seen running away from the building.
2) Mose – The Valet
Garden Party - Season 8, Episode 4
Andy Bernard (played by Ed Helms) throws a ‘garden party’ at the Schrute Farms to impress their new CEO Robert California (played by James Spader) and get validation from his own parents. Mose acts as a valet for the event. He forcefully takes the keys from Toby (played by Paul Lieberstein) and gives him a seed as a valet ticket.
Mose is then seen driving the car recklessly into the field. He later lines everyone’s cars and runs across them like a carefree child, instead of an actual valet.
1) Mose runs with car
Money - Season 4, Episode 7/8
When Jim and Pam learn that Dwight runs a bed and breakfast at Schrute Farms, they decide to spend a night there. When they arrive at the place, Mose appears out of nowhere and starts running alongside the car, leaving Jim and Pam baffled. He runs rigidly, making the whole scene hilarious.
The episode goes to show how Mose is a key part of their bed and breakfast venture, which includes beet wine-making, table-making and manure spreading on the field. Dwight even mentions that the farm is ‘wireless’ as Mose hid all the wires. At night, when Dwight reads Harry Potter to Jim and Pam, Mose sits awkwardly watching them.
