5 Harrowing details about the murder case of Mary Ann Murphy on Dateline
(1) Keri Murphy, Mary's daughter, had initially reported the crime
As we see on Dateline NBC episode Down The Rabbit Hole, Mary Murphy's 16-year-old daughter Keri was the first to report the crime. She had reportedly called 911 at 1 a.m. on July 16, 2012, and frantically reported her mother being attacked in their house.
By the time the police arrived, Mary was already dead, lying on her bed, all covered in blood. As per reports, Keri had not seen anything but only heard her mother's screams from inside the house, and when she reached the scene, the deed was already done.
(2) Mary Ann Murphy had succumbed to brutal injuries
As per reports from Dateline, Mary Ann Murphy was stabbed about 70 times and had lost a lot of blood. Moreover, Mary was reportedly sleeping on her bed when the perpetrator broke into her room and attacked her. One of the investigators at the Harris County Sheriff's Office said in a statement in the Killer Couples' latest episode,
"On her legs, on her arms, hands, neck, in the face. It was obvious that it was a very brutal attack."
(3) An unaccepted love story between Rebecca Keller and Keri Murphy brings a motive to murder
After joining the school choir, Keri met a 19-year-old senior girl named Rebecca Keller, aka Bunny. Keri's brother, Scott, had mentioned in a statement saying,
"Rebecca was three to four years older than Keri. They clicked immediately. It was an immediate draw towards each other,"
He further added:
"I had never seen Keri become completely an utterly infatuated with a single person,"
The two quickly grew fond of each other and were inseparable as a couple, reports. Keri's behavior towards her family had changed, troubling them a lot. Mary disapproved of her daughter's obsession with Rebecca. Keri was grounded after her father discovered the couple alone in her room. So, Keri got a burner phone from Rebecca to stay in touch.
Later, Mary's medical reports suggested that her blood had been coagulated, which indicated that Keri did not immediately call for help after her mother's murder. According to investigator Clopton, the deputies would not take that long to reach the crime scene, given that Keri had called right after she discovered the crime.
Moreover, according to reports, the search history on Keri's phone revealed that she was looking for ways to murder a person. Keri was also texting a lot with Rebecca on the night of the murder, supposedly planning to murder her mother. As per reports, the unaccepted love story between the two was supposedly the main motive for murdering Mary Ann Murphy.
(4) The Zein Ahmed (a classmate of Keri Murphy's classmate)'s involvement in Mary Ann Murphy's murder
Initial investigation had reportedly pointed towards Zein Ahmed, a classmate of Keri Murphy. Zein had shown interest in Keri, who did not want to get involved with him - they were initially just classmates, but later, their bond grew further to friendship, as per reports.
During the latter part of the investigation, Keri mentioned Zein's name in a polygraph test, who had reportedly helped her to contact Rebecca after being grounded. Investigator Clopton mentioned in a statement:
"Keri had solicited him to come to the house and beat on the wall to scare the mom,"
According to reports, Zein had initially confessed to the crimes he had committed, but small details in his story did not match the actual situation, which led to further investigation.
(5) Evidence from the final investigation added up to the events of the murder
The conversations retrieved from Keri Murphy's burner phone before the couple's trial indicated that they had exchanged intimate texts, which Mary discovered, adding to the motive of the crime. Keri had not reached the age of consent for Texas when the incident happened. According to reports, Rebecca carried out the stabbings, and Keri crafted the plan.
Rebecca was sentenced to 60 years of imprisonment, and Keri, being tried as an adult at the moment, was served 30 years.
