As seen in the 48 Hours episode, Rod Metzer fabricated a pancreatic cancer diagnosis a few days before the attack on his ex-wife. Rod was desperate to win Morgan back and called her, claiming to be terminally ill.

For the sake of their children, Morgan went to meet her ex-husband at his place, and Rod even showed her fake documents confirming that he was ill. Since Morgan believed those fake documents, she allowed Rod to live at her house.

Rod soon began to manipulate Morgan into rekindling their relationship, but she had already moved on. Morgan then suggested Rod inform his parents about his cancer, but he refused. Frustrated, Morgan asked Rod to move out.

However, it didn't help as Rod continued sending her texts all day, requesting her to reconcile. Morgan then lied about staying at her parents' house to escape from Rod's manipulation.

Another troubling fact about the case that's detailed in the 48 Hours episode is how cleverly Rod Metzer disguised his voice at the time of the attack. It is revealed that the intruder, after attacking Morgan, gave her a warning: not to move until she hears a car honking, or else she would end up getting killed.

Terrified, Morgan followed his warning, and she was helpless at the moment since her hands were also tied up. In the interview with 48 Hours, she said, "It was the sound of Batman's voice," when the intruder said she would regret it.

In the same episode, District Attorney Shannon Wallace described Rod Metzer as a manipulative individual who created a haunting experience for his ex-wife. The attorney said:

"When he spoke to her, he disguised his voice. He hit her with the butt of his gun and tried to strangle her two times. He zip-tied her hands, assaulted her, placed a pillowcase over her head, and dragged her to the deck."

Wallace explains that Morgan Metzer's home intrusion case reflects the brutality and trauma an individual faces after getting out of a toxic relationship. When asked if she felt like the intruder might kill him, Morgan said "yes," confirming that it was one of the most haunting experiences ever.
