1) When Joe was almost burned to death

Both Joe and Kate were entangled in a fire inside the building at Mooney's. For a while, it did seem like Joe would burn to death and consequently would never have to face the consequences of his crimes. However, in a surprising turn of events, he is rescued from the basement by Bronte, while Kate is left back on her own. Bronte then agrees to flee with Joe right outside the burning building.

2) When Joe hunted Bronte through the woods

The relationship between Bronte and Joe has been tense all throughout the final season of You on Netflix. Joe turned on Bronte when she threatened to call the police on him. Both of them had a physical altercation, with Joe overpowering Bronte. While struggling, the gun that Bronte held goes off and she is shot. She then leaves the house and runs through the woods as Joe is hot on her trail.

3) When Joe turned to the audience

By the end of the finale episode, Joe turns on the audience to reveal the dark landscape that besieges everyone. He is seen alone in his prison cell, reading The Executioner's Song, written by Norman Mailer. The voiceover narrates his innermost thoughts:

"Why am I in a cage when these crazies write me all the depraved things they want me to do to them? Maybe we have a problem as a society. Maybe we should fix what’s broken in us. Maybe the problem isn’t me."

He then looks at the camera hauntingly and declares: "Maybe it's you."

Showrunners open up about the finale of season 5

Speaking in an exclusive interview with TV Insider, You showrunner Michael Foley opened up about the Netflix show's finale and the significance of Joe Goldberg's incarceration:

"We thought that being true to character meant that even in the end, with all that Joe has to face and the fact that he was on trial, that he wouldn’t hold himself accountable, right? That’s just exactly the character that we had drawn. We also recognize that in society, there are people who within this sort of Dahmer environment of the last couple years and beyond, but obviously accentuated by the Netflix series, it just felt like a nod was necessary, and that’s how we did that."
