The acclaimed Yellowstone prequel, 1923, has finally come to an end after its intense finale. By intense, we mean to say that almost every character in the show ended up either dead, grieving, or broken in some way.

Yes, that's right. Even though 1923 is a Western show known for its strength and survival, the finale has proved that the Duttons and others are just barely holding on.

There's not much left of their family or land, and even the hope feels distant. The last moments showed Jacob Dutton, now very old and full of scars. His wife, Cara, is now looking after a premature baby who happens to be their grandnephew.

Since the baby lost his mother a few moments after the birth, there's no celebration or victory. The ranch didn’t come back to life either, just as Liz explained earlier that Montana is a place of struggle.

As mentioned above, 1923 featured some of the most tragic deaths, including Alexandra, who was eager to reunite with her husband, Spencer Dutton. After a long wait, Alexandra finally met her new husband, but she met her end soon after their first child was born prematurely.

Keep reading to learn more about the finale and who else died in the show.

Who died in the Yellowstone prequel, 1923 Season 2?

As seen in the 1923 finale, the Native American girl Teonna finally gets freedom after enduring horrible abuse in a religious boarding school. After watching her story, many fans and viewers might recall Thomas Rainwater from Yellowstone, who also faced harsh realities.

While Teonna finds freedom, the Duttons are still fighting to protect their ranch from Donald Whitfield. This is the same man who has been trying to snatch the land from the titular family to make it a part of his business.

Despite his power and the armed men to save him, Spencer defeats all his enemies, ultimately killing Whitfield. This way, the evil Donald Whitfield also meets his end in the prequel.

However, Alexandra and Whitfield aren't the only two key characters who die in the 1923 finale. Banner also lost his life while saving Jacob during the shootout at Livingston.

The Yellowstone universe is far from over after 1923. A new prequel titled 1944 is on the way, which will follow the Dutton family during the chaos of World War II. It aims to show how the global conflict affects the Yellowstone Ranch and its heirs and is expected to bring new characters to play the Duttons.

While Taylor Sheridan hasn't confirmed which key figure from 1923 will return, Brandon Sklenar, who plays Spence, mentioned that fans might see him again. Per Variety, the actor said:

"Listen, I know that ‘1944’ is a thing that they are planning on doing here, and maybe we'll see Spencer in 1944. That is something I would be interested in doing."

Another major addition is The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer. Set in the Madison River Valley in Montana, this series will focus on a New York family dealing with grief and emotional healing. It won’t center around the Duttons, but it will still be a part of the Yellowstone universe, exploring new characters and stories in the same dramatic world.

Fan-favorite characters are also getting the spotlight. A Beth and Rip spinoff is in development, which could explore their complicated love story even further, along with their role in guarding the Yellowstone ranch. On top of that, there are early talks of a possible Kayce Dutton spinoff, though not much is known yet.
