Yellowstone's spin-off series is finally back, with 1923 Season 2 about to premiere in February, and its trailer teases a harsh journey for Spencer Dutton.
After 1883's James and Margaret's deaths, Jacob and Cara took his children under their care. Spencer, James' son, was on a journey in Africa in Season 1 when Cara asked him to come home to help save their Montana ranch.
However, the Season 1 finale spelled trouble for Spencer and his wife, Alex, when their boat home capsized. While the couple made their way safely to land, they got separated, and this is how Season 1 ended for them.
As the show's trailer suggests, Spencer will go on a perilous journey to return to the ranch, but it is not revealed whether he will make it back or not.
More on Spencer's journey and possibilities for his return in 1923 Season 2 in our story.
1923 Season 2 trailer teases Spencer Dutton's long journey
After barely making it to land, Spencer Dutton is on a new journey in 1923 Season 2, as teased in the show's new trailer. He says:
"In Montana, there's a war over my family's land. And they're losing it. I know what to do. I'm coming home."
But this journey will not be simple, as this is 1923, and Spencer has to face harsh weather, thieves, and enemies he will encounter on the road before or if he makes it back to his home to Cara. The teaser suggests that Spencer is about to fight a gang of men, which does not look good for his journey.
Since Season 2 is the final season of this spin-off show, Spencer's arc will have some resolution, but it is uncertain whether he will make it back to Montana, as the teaser does not give it away.
But even if he does succeed, the war will be far from over, but the context will set up for other stories in Sheridan's Yellowstone universe.
In addition to returning to his ranch, Spencer also has to reunite with his wife, Alex, who is on a separate journey after being separated from her husband. Will the pair reunite? Will they both make it safely to the ranch? These are the questions that fans are looking forward to in Season 2.
1923 Season 2 trailer: Jacob goes on a search for Spencer
In addition to Spencer's journey back home, it seems like Jacob will also undergo a journey of his own to bring back Spencer home, leaving Cara alone to fend for the ranch. In the trailer, Cara asks him, "Bring him home. Promise," and Jacob replies, ''I promise''.
It can be assumed that Cara is asking her husband to bring Spencer back home after news of their accident in the 1923 Season 1 finale reached them. Later, Jacob is standing at a train station, waiting to start his journey to bring Spencer back.
The trailer teases a lot of possibilities for Season 2. Jacob could be reunited with Spencer, Alex, or both on his journey, and they will all return home. It is also very possible that Spencer arrives home before Jacob, who would still be out there looking for him.
The teaser also does subtle foreshadowing, where she says, ''This ranch will drive you to your death''. While the person she is saying this to is not revealed, it can be assumed that he is Jacob, and it could be a subtle foreshadowing that he might die in 1923 Season 2.
Since Season 2 is the show's final season, like its parent show Yellowstone, it might also end with the death of the Dutton patriarch, i.e., Jacob.
Tune into 1923 Season 2 on Paramount+ on February 23, 2025, to find answers to all these questions.
