Yellowstone spin-off show 1923 recently returned to Paramount+ and the Paramount Network with a second season. In the latest episode of 1923 season two, the fate of a prominent character from the first season of the show, that had audiences hanging on a cliffhanger, was finally revealed and explained. 1923 is led by the formidable Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton and the second episode had him travelling to town to meet the judge on account of Zane Davis and his wife Alice's arrest.
Zane Davis appeared throughout the entirety of the debut season of 1923. The character has often been compared with another Yellowstone character, Rip Wheeler. When it comes to standing by Jacob Dutton, Zane is immensely loyal and forthcoming. Working as a foreman at the Dutton family ranch, he developed close ties with the Dutton family that would one day come back to save him from being convicted.
At the end of the first season of the Paramount show, Zane is arrested for his marriage to his Asian wife Alice under the anti-miscegenation laws prevalent in Montana. He also ends up sustaining a head injury and therefore his fate is the subject of speculation among the audience. This was aided further by his absence from the premiere episode of the second season.
Here's everything that we know.
1923 character Zene Davis' trials and tribulations
Despite being a standup guy and a loyal employee of Jacob Dutton, Zene Davis' life on 1923 has been scarcely smooth sailing. The first season of the Yellowstone spin-off saw him being arrested on account of his interracial marriage. This was against the law back in the period of the show since anti-miscegenation laws that had been brought into force to safeguard the honor of the women were now being used to victimize an honest marriage.
Zane was then afflicted with head injuries that forced him to remain in a clinic for a while. Things didn't look up for him when the show narrated that no doctor was able to treat him. After his arrest, Zane and Alice were taken away to Bozeman, Montana. Jacob Dutton eventually went up to the town and leaned on the judge after having caught the latter partaking in alcohol, and convinced him to let Zane and his wife go.
On the way back to their ranch, Jacob, Zane, and Alice are stranded in the snow, being assaulted by an exceptionally harsh winter.
Brian Geraghty speaks about the show
According to a report by ExpressUK, actor Brian Geraghty, who plays the character of Zane Davis, expressed his thoughts about the storyline and the show. He remarked:
"It's a meaningful storyline for me because it's actually personal in my own life. I had the privilege to learn about that and what it would have been like or what it's like today and I think it mirrors, in ways, what we're going through as a nation and what we'll always go through, which is segregation and racism."
1923 is exclusively available on Paramount+.
