Elsewhere, Spencer finally comes face-to-face with Donald Whitefield for their final showdown, where he is shot in the head, and the antagonist bids farewell to the world forever.

Here is everything that happened in the 1923 Season 2 finale.

The 1923 Season 2 finale- breakdown and main events

The 1923 Season 2 finale finally saw the end of the Duttons' feud with Donald Whitfield, with the latter antagonist finally meeting his end, but before we lead to that, there are many progressions to note.

As Jacob and McDowell wait for Spencer's return at the train station, Clyde and other Whitfield's men surround the station, waiting for the hunter's return. Meanwhile, Banner also arrives at the station, but he has had a change of heart and wants to leave forever with his family. On Jacob's insistence, however, he agrees to end what he started and stay for the eventual fight.

Alex manages to survive the cold in the Brit's car by burning a fire and keeping herself warm. As Spencer's train nears her, he sees the burning fire and gets off the moving train to finally reunite with her, who tells him she is pregnant. They both board the train again, but the doctor advises them to travel to Bozeman, where Alex can be treated properly, as she has suffered extreme frostbite.

While arriving at the station, Spencer senses danger as Clyde and his men open fire. Spencer finally reunites with Jacob and leaves him with Alex to continue to Bozeman while he handles Clyde and his men. Clyde meets his end through Banner, who later gets killed by McDowell, unaware that he was now a changed man.

Spencer reaches the ranch, where Whitfield's men have taken over and are about to blow up the place with guns. After reuniting with Cara, Spencer takes his shotgun and kills all of Whitfield's men, saving the ranch for now.

Back at the hospital, Jacob learns that Alex's baby would be premature, but he would not survive. They also tell him that because Alex has suffered extreme frostbite, they need to amputate both her legs and one hand immediately, or she will not survive.

Alex gives birth to a boy and names him John, but the doctors ask her to rush to surgery, or she will not survive. She is adamant about spending her baby's only hour with him and refuses surgery. When Cara and Spencer arrive at the hospital, Alex hands their baby over to her husband and passes on, her husband vowing to avenge Whitfield for his wife's death.

An enraged Spencer arrives at Whitfield's mansion and takes a shot directly to his gut. After making him say Alex's name for one last time, he finally puts a bullet to his head, and Whitfield dies with his brains spilling out.

The 1923 Season 2 finale- ending explained

The 1923 Season 2 finale also offers a glimpse into the Duttons' future. After Jacob's cowboys find Jack's body in the woods, Elizabeth packs her bags and leaves for her home. After the devastating events of the past few years, Cara and Jacob finally sit on their porch with a healthy baby Jack while Spencer readies to tend to the cattle.

When he asks his uncle to join him, he says that he is retiring and spends quality time with Cara at the ranch as promised. Spencer prepares to feed the cattle at the ranch, hinting he will take over the ranch as the new Dutton.

As the 1923 Season 2 finale came to an end, Elsa Dutton's narration revealed that Spencer never remarried, but he did have a son with a widow once. He kept loving Alex until his last breath and visited her grave frequently until, after 45 years, he also joined her in the afterlife. Spencer and Alex are finally shown reunited in the afterlife, where they embrace and dance at a ballroom party.
