Every beginning has its end. And that is the case even for TV shows. But sometimes, a show is so compelling that its closure or cancellation feels incorrect. Whether it is due to its excellent writing, direction, performances, or humor, there have been certain TV shows that got canceled before their time causing disappointment among fans. 1. Girlboss
Created by Kay Cannon and based on the autobiography of Sophia Amoruso, this comedy series stars Britt Robertson. The show is quirky and light-hearted. It revolves around Sophia who is determined to start her own company while working as a campus safety host at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. The show presented a strong and ambitious female lead, but sadly it was axed after only one season.
2. Bunheads
Starring Sutton Foster, this comedy-drama is created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Lamar Damon. A former ballerina, Michelle, who is a Las Vegas showgirl, decides to escape her life by marrying an admirer. After Michelle shifts to a small, coastal town with her husband, he dies soon after and she must adjust to a new life and teach at her mother-in-law’s ballet school. The show was hilarious and had a unique premise. Sadly, it was canceled after one season.
3. Pushing Daisies
A unique show created by Bryan Fuller, the comedy-drama stars Lee Pace and revolves around the life of Ned, who can bring dead things back to life. He brings back his dead crush, and along with his co-worker and a private investigator, solves criminal cases. Known for its unusual visuals and quirky characters, the show combined fairytale narration with forensic science. Universally acclaimed, it came as a surprise when the show got canceled after only two seasons.
4. Mindhunter
Executively produced by David Fincher and Charlize Theron, the psychological crime thriller is based on the book by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. The show was immensely popular during its two-season run. The series follows the founding members of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit in the late 1970s that began criminal profiling serial killers and essentially tried to learn the psychology behind their crimes. A gritty show, it unfortunately ended too soon.
5. Timeless
A sci-fi drama created by Eric Kripke and Shawn Ryan, the show is a cat-and-mouse chase between a terrorist, Flynn, who finds a time machine, and a sergeant, a history professor, and an engineer who are tasked with stopping him. As Flynn plans on rewriting history, the trio must stop him and find out about the organization that created the machine. The show explored the concept of time travel and had plenty of action and an interesting premise, but it sadly ended after two seasons.
6. Sense8
Starring Jamie Clayton, Max Riemelt, and others, this sci-fi drama is about eight strangers from across the globe who are “sensates”—humans who are mentally and emotionally linked. The show was praised for its multinational cast and tackling of issues such as sexuality and gender. The series advocated the message of empathy across differences and viewers were angry when the show got cancelled with a cliffhanger. Netflix had to produce a special series finale to appease the fans.
7. Hannibal
Based on the novel by Thomas Harris and created by Bryan Fuller, this psychological thriller explores the character of Hannibal Lecter (played by Mads Mikkelsen), who is a genius forensic psychiatrist and a cannibal. His relationship with an FBI investigator, Will, forms the crux of the series as the two solve cases while navigating their complicated relationship with each other. The show was canceled after three seasons but became a cult favorite afterward.
8. Pitch
Starring Kylie Bunbury, Tim Jo, and others, this drama series revolves around Ginny Baker, who is a gifted baseball pitcher and the first woman to play in a major league. The show portrays the world of baseball and how gender politics are still rampant in the sport. The series offered a fresh premise and had a strong female lead. Created by Dan Fogelman and Rick Singer, the show unfortunately ended after one season.
9. Forever
The cancellation of Forever led to fans campaigning on social media. Despite the fervor, this popular fantasy crime drama created by Matt Miller could not be saved. Starring Ioan Gruffudd as Dr. Morgan, the series is about an immortal NYC medical examiner who uses his supernatural knowledge and abilities to help the New York police in solving crimes. The show meditated on themes of life and immortality as Morgan wanted to end his life. The show is now a cult favorite.
10. Looking
Starring Mindhunter fame Jonathan Groff and Russell Tovey, this comedy-drama was created by Michael Lannan and aired for two seasons before getting canceled. The show was universally praised for its representation of the LGBTQ+ community as the show revolved around the experiences of three gay men in San Francisco. Despite its fresh writing and direction, the show could not continue.
11. Good Girls Revolt
Based on the book by Lynn Povich, this drama examined the difference in the treatment of men and women in their workplaces. A group of female writers at a fictional news magazine are more talented than their male counterparts but are relegated to lower positions, paid less, and uncredited for their research. The show presented a very real problem that continues in contemporary times but was unfortunately canceled after one season.
12. The Fosters
Created by Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige, this family drama is one of the few shows that centers around a lesbian couple. It follows the adventures of the Adams-Foster family. They have a son and four daughters and the show is set in San Diego, California. The show was appreciated for its LGBTQ+ representation and had five seasons before it got canceled.
13. Freaks and Geeks
Another show from the early aughts that ended too soon is this teen comedy-drama that is still loved by many fans. Created by Paul Feig, the show is set in 1980s Detroit and follows the sibling duo, Lindsay and Sam. While Lindsay joins the high school clique of freaks, her brother becomes a part of the geeks. The show highlighted the problems of adolescent life and is regularly listed as one of the greatest shows of all time.
14. Gravity Falls
Created by Alex Hirsch, this animated mystery comedy revolves around the adventures of the twins Dipper and Mabel, who spend their summer with their uncle at Gravity Falls, Oregon, and encounter various paranormal incidents and creatures. The siblings decide to help their uncle in his business and investigate the mysteries. The show was praised for its writing, characters, and humor.
15. Parks and Recreation
Even though the series aired for seven seasons, this political satire and mockumentary sitcom’s fans still bemoan its demise. Starring Amy Poehler, Adam Scott, Chris Pratt, and others, the show is about a mid-level bureaucrat Leslie, who wants to convert a planned construction site into a community park. The show was praised for its socially aware themes and well-researched commentary.
