One of the most memorable characters from HIMYM or How I Met Your Mother, Barney Stinson, is an iconic sitcom character played by Neil Patrick Harris.

Created by Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, HIMYM, revolves around the character Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor), who tells his children how he met their mother. This story then leads to a group of Ted’s friends in New York City, who juggle life, love, and relationships.

One of those friends is Barney Stinson, who is known for his playboy personality. Stinson even has a playbook created to teach his friends the art of picking-up women. But his pick-up lines are cheesy and inappropriate. Here are 11 times when Stinson’s pick-up lines were too cringe to work in real life.

SNASA, "He's not coming", and other cringe pick-up lines by Barney Stinson from HIMYM

If there is anyone who can turn a cheesy pick-up line into something marvelous, then it is only and only Barney Stinson from HIMYM. Others should probably not try to use his pick-up lines in real life, because they would only result in utter embarrassment.

In season 1, episode 21, it is Ted’s birthday and Barney decides to gift him something that is characteristically Barney Stinson. As the gang is celebrating Ted’s birthday, Barney decides to get up and randomly choose a woman and begins to feign concern as he says that she is hurt and someone needs to call an ambulance.

As his friends watch in horror and amazement, he calls for 911 and hilariously enough, someone from the department does come up and begins to check up on the lady. While the lady keeps saying that she is perfectly alright and nothing has happened, Barney decides to then say the above-mentioned pick-up line, which is extremely hilarious. Funny part is that the woman begins to gush as the crowd eggs her to give her number. But in real life? That might not happen.

2. Smoon and SNASA

Another instance when Barney Stinson from HIMYM is able to successfully use a cringe pick-up line is when in season 5, episode 8, Barney decides to use his suave appeal to charm his way through a gullible woman. Barney is sitting at a restaurant and having a meal with a woman, when he decides to simply impress the woman with the lie that he is an astronaut at NASA and works for a secret version of the space program, called SNASA. Because of which, he has to go for secret missions to the secret moon, or smoon.

As the woman is visibly awe-struck, it is a gentle reminder to the viewers that this pick-up line can only work in the world of telly and would definitely not work in real life. The ruse is as see through as a mirror and only a gullible lady like the one in the episode, could possibly fall for it. This is an example of one of those Barney Stinson pick-up lines, that would never fly in the real world.

3. “Your body is a wonderland and I want to be Alice.”

HIMYM is a hilarious series and Barney Stinson definitely created some of the most hilarious moments in the show with his cringeworthy pick-up lines. It is definitely a wonder that his inappropriate commentary did not get him into trouble and instead, got him the lady he wanted.

However, viewers from the real world should definitely proceed with caution as most women would not fall for such cheesy lines. While most of Barney’s lines are based on elaborate manipulations, this one is quite straightforward. In one of the episodes, Barney decides to say the above line in a smooth manner to his lady love of the moment. The line has a literary reference as it refers to the Alice in Wonderland story, where Alice explored the wonderland, she fell into. Sleazy and cheesy, this is a line that can only work in the world of HIMYM. Those who think that being a follower of Barney Stinson pick-up lines would get them women, should proceed with caution.

4. “I’m also a horny devil.”

This line of Barney’s is definitely the truth as there is no other character in HIMYM, who is more into intimacy than Barney Stinson. Known for his playboy persona and an active intimate life, Barney is always on the hunt for his next lady love. True to his nature, Barney decides to don a hilarious devil’s costume on the occasion of Halloween and when he attends a rooftop Halloween party in season 1, episode 6. Barney does not miss any chance to say to a girl that he is the lustful devil, he even points to his perky devil ears that are on top of his head to declare his statement. While this line of his verges thankfully more on the corny side and not the vulgar side, it is still cheesy and a little inappropriate to say to anyone you meet for the first time. Therefore, this pick-up line will also not get any good results in the real world. Perhaps the reason why the show shows us so many pick-up lines from Barney, is to warn us against using them in the real world.

5. “He’s not coming”

This one is another page out of the playbook by Barney Stinson. In HIMYM, viewers have seen Barney trach his friends on the art of picking up women and flirting with them. And while his methods work for the most part in the show, they are by no means what you want to emulate in real life. In one of the episodes, he declares to his friends that he will be going to the top of the Empire State Building, which has an observation deck, where many pop cultural moments of long lost love have been brought together when the two lovers unite on top of the building. Stinson uses this to his advantage and tries to pick-up a girl who is actually waiting for her love to come and meet her there. While this is one of the most selfish things that Barney can do, because he is breaking apart true love for his own selfish needs, the show plays it off as a hilarious plot point. But viewers should definitely not use this in real life.

6. “I wanna lick you all over like the Liberty Bell”

Another instance when Barney Stinson from HIMYM has no shame. Surprisingly, even though Barney speaks some of the crassest things to pick-up women, he himself, does not come across as vulgar. But this is the magic and charm of Barney, who operates in the fictional world and viewers should definitely not try to become like him in real-life.

In one of the episodes, Barney and Ted are heading to the airport to pick someone up, which Ted thought was about providing a ride to someone who had just flown in. However, Barney meant that he wanted to pick some women up. The two friends then head to Philadelphia and Barney wants to have an adventure in the city. As Barney says, he wants to do legendary things. Therefore, when he comes across the liberty bell, Barney decides to lick it, because well, it is Barney we are talking about. During this instance, when he meets a woman who works there, the smooth talker Stinson decides to say this outrageous line, which he believes is fitting as he did in fact lick the bell.

7. “I feel like I’ve done so much good I have a ‘soul boner.’”

When a person does charity, he or she feels good in a spiritual manner. But not Barney Stinson from HIMYM. In season 1, episode 9, the Thanksgiving season is in full swing and while all the other gang members have a plan for the day, Robin and Ted have nothing to do. They therefore end up at a soup kitchen and decide to help the less fortunate ones by doing some charity. But to their great surprise, Barney is already there and doing a good deed. He is even praised by the staff and the people as one of the best volunteers. Amused and bewildered, Ted and Robin know that this is unlike Barney and of course, Barney decides to ruin the good moment by saying the above line. One can say, that at least Barney is honest and does not hold back what is in his heart. In this case, the line was more of a compliment to himself than a pick-up line but Barney being Barney, could definitely say this to a lady as well. Stinson is someone who you can rely on to say the most inappropriate things at the most inappropriate times. Therefore, one should not try this in real life.

8. “There are so many things to do with the human mouth. Why waste it on talking?”

If there is one thing that people can trust Barney for, then it is the fact that he can instantly shift the room’s mood, by saying something wild and suggestive. The above said line is just one instance out of many, when Stinson decided to say the most inappropriate stuff out loud. The dialogue clearly has a lot of se*ual innuendo and saying this to a girl in real life is a sure shot recipe for disaster. No one wants to come across as vulgar when they are trying to pick-up women and following the Barney Stinson pick-up lines method is certainly not that way to go. While barney does not say this line to a woman thankfully, the fact that he does think this to be a clever thing to be spoken of, is hilarious and ridiculous in itself. Viewers of the show, should therefore stay far away from the mantras of Barney Stinson school of flirting.

9. “What do you say we go out to dinner, have some chicken…maybe some s*x?”

Being a gentleman is not in the books of Barney Stinson. He can be charming and suave, yes, but he does not know the art of subtlety. And that is a fact. While Barney might be able to get women to date him even after saying the most outrageous things to their face, this technique of his can only work in the world of HIMYM. In the real world, there needs to be some tact if you want to get women to wine and dine with you. In one of the episode, Barney is his usual self and comes straight to the point by proposing to a woman that they go out for a meal and then have intercourse. It is a miracle and a mysterious secret that only Barney knows because he is still able to get women with his crass dialogues. His bafflingly hilarious lines might work on the women of the show but these Barney Stinson pick-up lines should be used with caution in the real world. Or maybe, should not be used at all.

10. “Come with me if you want to bang.”

Another instance when Barney should be praised for being honest and saying it like it is, even if it is the most inappropriate thing that he can say. While most people try to have a conversation first and then reveal their intentions to have an intimate moment with someone, Barney Stinson from HIMYM, does not believe in wasting time. His methods are quick and hilarious. In one of the episodes, he wastes no time in telling a woman what he wants his date to ultimately be like. While most people use dating apps in today’s world to say what is on their mind without hesitation because they are behind a screen, kudos should be given to Barney, because he said all the cheesy things to women on their face and had the guts to do it openly. If viewers watched this episode and thought to themselves that no one in their right mind can say such things to complete strangers, then they thought right. Barney Stinson pick-up lines only work in the fictional world of HIMYM and viewers should refrain from using such dialogues in real life.

11. “The Don’t Drink That”

One of Barney Stinson’s classic ways of picking up a girl in HIMYM is by walking up to a girl who is having a drink and making up a lie that she should not drink that because he saw someone put something in it. This is actually an effective pick-up line to some extent as women are always cautious of their drinks being spiked and if someone warns them, they would immediately believe him and make him trustworthy. This pick-up line is used by Barney in one of the episodes and hilariously enough, he does not care if his friend Ted is the one that has to take the fall. One of the classic Barney Stinson pick-up lines, the episode also sees Barney dishing out a whole playbook consisting of pick-up lines that men should use on women and the warning against drinking line, is just one of those. While this pick-up line does seem believable than Barney’s other outrageous ones, it is still a bit cringe and should not be used most probably.
