John Foster has passed the test of the Top 12 on American Idol and got a spot in the Top 10 after his performance on the most recent episode. The Addis native was mentored by season 3 winner Fantasia, who immediately called him a "Ken doll" upon seeing his physique.
John had decided to sing I Told You So by Randy Travis and Carrie Underwood. The latter is a judge on American Idol right now, so it became more of a tribute to her legacy.
Fans, who have adored John since the first time he entered the show, were very impressed by the performance and took to X to express their appreciation towards the 18-year-old singer. One American Idol fan commented,
"Haven't watched American Idol in a very long time; however, I saw an episode tonight. If it were up to me, John Foster would be the winner. The song he wrote & performed is 100% radio ready!"
"I know I have been emotional lately but watching John Foster sing “I told you so” to Carrie underwood had me BAWLINGGGGGG! Ten. TEN," wrote another fan.
A few other fans joined in to praise the singer and said,
"John Foster, that hat tip at the end to @carrieunderwood was a truly playa move and we are here for it! Awesome performance!" a tweet read.
"First Dwight Yoakam, now it's Ken Doll. LOL....Dude's way better good looking than those slobs. Top 14 and already a heartthrob, but he's such a solid performer," said a fan.
American Idol contestant John Foster makes it to the Top 10
John Foster had decided to sing I Told You So by Randy Travis and Carrie Underwood on American Idol's latest episode. The contestant met with his mentor, Fantasia, the winner of season 3.
As soon as she saw him, Fantasia said he looked like a "Ken doll." In a confessional, John said that he has never been called a Ken doll before, but coming from Fantasia, that's a good thing.
John chose this song to express his gratitude towards Carrie. He recalled how, during the auditions, she had asked him to sing a second song, which helped him find his range and the genres that he could cover.
John said that this was a way of saying "I love you" to Carrie and thanking her for all the support she cast his way.
Revealing to Fantasia, John says that this is the first time in his Idol journey that he is going to sit and perform. Previously, John had always been strapped to his guitar, playing country music while singing. However, this performance was going to have him on a stool.
Guiding him through it all, Fantasia asked John to do some modulations on the song. She praised his voice and said it was like water. However, she did not want him to keep the song monotonous and instead, have some modulations to it.
Given the fact that John was trying to do this song for Carrie, Fantasia advised him to get closer to her by the end of the song, and as soon as he finishes, tip his hat off to her.
Doing exactly that on stage, John was able to impress the judges, and Carrie even claimed she was "blushing." Approving of his performance, she said she loves to see him grow on the stage as he tries new ventures every time.
American Idol season 23 episodes can be watched weekly on Sundays and Mondays at 8 PM Eastern Time on ABC. Later, the episodes are available to stream via Hulu.
