Based on the series of novels by George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones is a fantasy drama show that gained universal acclaim and popularity because of its plot, characters, visuals, and epic scale. Filled with deceptions, wars, and power dynamics, the show is about the political conflicts among the noble families of the mythical kingdoms, Westeros and Essos.

As the show is set in medieval times, there is a lot of emphasis on amassing wealth through royalty, trade, and conquest. This had made several characters in the show the wealthiest Game of Thrones characters. Here is a list of 10 such characters who are ranked in order of rich to the richest.

Cersei Lannister, Joffrey Baratheon, and other wealthiest Game of Thrones characters

1. Robert Baratheon

As the actual king of all the seven kingdoms, Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy) does occupy a place in this list of the wealthiest Game of Thrones characters, courtesy of tax revenues from all the regions, incomes from royal lands, and more. However, his wealth is nowhere near the Lannisters, and his spot is low on the list because Robert always had a terrible habit of spending more money than he made.

When he married Cersei Lannister, Robert did inherit a lot of wealth, and early on, he was a victorious king who could live comfortably. However, his house, Baratheon, was never on the wealthy side in the Great Houses of Westeros, and therefore, even though his marriage resulted in access to much more wealth, his ill habits made him squander it foolishly.

Even though he was given a lot of wealth and money throughout his life, he could never learn how to balance things financially. He even got the crown into a huge debt, and Tywin Lannister's help kept him steady somehow.

2. Doran Martell

Played by Alexander Siddig, Doran Martell is the Prince of Dorne and Lord of Sunspear and therefore ruled over an already wealthy region. Doran had a small appearance in the show, but he knew how to trade in valuable commodities like exotic oranges, rich wines, and hot peppers. Therefore, he never needed to worry when war and conflicts took place, and could even wait for the conflict to end. He could also plan revenge without leading to the economic loss of Dorne.

Doran was therefore one of the most financially secure and wealthiest Game of Thrones characters in the series. Further, Dorne did not see many wars on its soil, as compared to other lands in the show, which kept the region’s treasury rich. Therefore, key points like Martells’ family wealth, which went back to the family’s marriage with the Rhoynish Queen Nymeria, lack of wars, key ports and commodities, and active trade, led to Doran becoming one of the wealthiest Game of Thrones characters.

3. Lysa Arryn

Lysa Arryn (Kate Dickie) belongs to the House Arryn of the Vale. While her impulsive, cowardly, and paranoid actions made her an unstable character that fans did not particularly like, Lysa did have an understanding of how to keep her region’s coffers full. She hoarded a vast amount of wealth and ferociously protected the Vale.

While her methods might be suffocating, she was at least financially secure. Even when Lysa’s sister, Catelyn Stark, was in the midst of war, she refused to help her sister in dire times and kept her treasury full. Further, her region was also blessed with fertile land, which made it possible for the Arryns to gain a considerable amount of revenue from agriculture.

Lysa, therefore, is one of the wealthiest Game of Thrones characters and amassed a fortune as she had centuries-old nobility’s wealth.

4. Petyr Baelish

Played by Aidan Gillen, Petyr Baelish is another character in the show who might not have been a fan favorite because of his sneaky and manipulative ways, but he managed to gain considerable wealth. He is one of those characters in the show who is now one of the wealthiest Game of Thrones characters, but when he first arrived on the scene, he did not have a single penny.

Because of his clever ways, Littlefinger was able to reach all the way up to the higher circles of the Westerosi society, and even though he was born into a small lordship, his ability to manipulate people and situations afforded him the ability to ingratiate himself with the High Lords of the land. His rise was so meteoric that he even became a close aide of the king.

Further, he won various titles that afforded him wealth and ran a lucrative brothel business, making him extremely rich. Petyr’s position as the Master of Coin ultimately made him one of the richest in the series.

5. Mace Tyrell

Also known as Lord Mace Tyrell (Roger Ashton-Griffiths), he is one of those characters who is lucky to be born into wealth. The Lord himself did not do much to earn the riches that he enjoyed, and most of the time, he did not act in a clever and sharp manner.

However, luck was on his side, and because he was born into the Tyrell family and was the son of one of the shrewdest people in Westeros, Mace was able to become one of the wealthiest Game of Thrones characters in the series. He was the Lord of Highgarden and the High Lord of the Reach, one of the two richest regions in Westeros.

Therefore, Mace lived comfortably and did not have to worry about financial insecurity. Further, Mace also earned through his family’s big chunk of renewable resources, which enabled him to be rich. These Tyrells' resources were more than any other house in Westeros.

6. Daenerys Targaryen

The resolute princess began her journey in the show as an exiled and penniless person. However, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) soon became one of the strongest characters in the show, who earned wealth through her power and not through any cunning means.

Known for her fierce nature and ability to protect and stay loyal, the mother of dragons did not need to prove her worth to her subjects and automatically amassed a lot of people who admired her. Her fortunes changed when she got the gift of the three dragon eggs, and she proved to be an able mother and conqueror. Her dragons alone allowed her to be financially safe as she amassed huge wealth through conquest and through the loyalty of her subjects.

Interestingly, Daenerys is never seen amassing wealth on the basis of commerce; all the riches she earned were by raw power and strength. The mother ruled over vast armies, controlled the treasury, and had a fleet of ships, which makes her one of the wealthiest Game of Thrones characters.

7. Joffrey Baratheon

Another character who did not earn money based on his own shrewdness or capability to conquer was Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson). One of the most hated characters in the series, Joffrey is one of those who lucked into wealth. His actions were never clever, and he did not think ahead; therefore, he would be broke soon if he were not born into royalty.

However, being born into the powerful Lannister and Baratheon families has its merits, and the young and evil boy enjoyed living a lavish life and inflicting torture on others. As the king of Westeros, he enjoyed taxes from all the seven kingdoms. Further, he was the heir to the House of Lannister and was therefore a part of the wealthiest house in all the kingdoms.

While Joffrey was somewhat capable of managing his funds, he would have undoubtedly squandered his wealth if he had grown older. But as fate would have it, the sadistic ruler died an early death and therefore did not survive long enough to deplete his wealth.

8. Cersei Lannister

Played by Lena Headey, Cersei Lannister is one of the most ruthless characters in the show and was able to amass wealth not only on the basis of being born into a rich family, but also because of her own clever tactics. As the daughter of one of the richest men in the show, Tywin Lannister, Cersei grew up with all kinds of riches and was also the sister of Jaime and Tyrion Lannister.

However, there were times in her life when her wealth fluctuated because of the challenges she went through, which were brought upon by her own pride. As a Lannister, Cersei is naturally wealthy, and after her father’s death, she also inherits his fortune. But when her coffers were getting empty, the villain of the show did not mind destroying House Tyrell and seizing the massive gold stores of the Highgarden.

As the Queen of the land, she had control over the Reach’s lands and the crown’s taxes, which kept her amply wealthy.

9. Olenna Tyrell

Played by Diana Rigg, Olenna Tyrell is one of the wealthiest characters in the series because she is a member of the wealthy House of Tyrell, which has numerous assets within the Reach. While Olenna is old, she is still ferocious and a clever matriarch. Also known as The Queen of Thorns, she is the former House Tyrell of Highgarden matriarch. She therefore commanded the Reach, which was Westeros’ most prosperous land with ample supplies of food, labor, and money.

Because of the wealth she amassed due to agriculture, Olenna controlled the food in Westeros and the beneficial exports like wine and livestock. The Tyrells, therefore, rival the Lannisters in wealth. Further, Olenna also hailed from House Redwyne, which had a flourishing wine trade and navy, which added riches to the Tyrell family and made one of the wealthiest Game of Thrones characters.

10. Tywin Lannister

The patriarch of the Lannister family, Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance), is one of the richest men in the series. As the Lord of Casterly Rock and the former Hand of the King, Tywin is one of the few characters in the show who knows how to manage wealth and grow it. His power and influence also made him amass great wealth, and his ruthless leadership made him the richest in the Seven Kingdoms.

Even though he was born into an already wealthy house, Tywin was a smart leader and was able to grow his wealth by amassing lands, riches, and the prosperous city of Lannisport. This further increased the House of Lannister’s standing in the kingdom.

Even when Tywin lent millions to the Iron Throne and financed King Robert, he still had heaps and stores of wealth. Further, even when Lannister’s mines went dry, Tywin was clever enough to have plenty of gold reserves. He was, therefore, one of the wealthiest Game of Thrones characters.
